Fact Sheet
Save the Vineyard
Issue 18

1. Put-in-Bay Township Park District wishes to purchase approximately 11 acres of grass land and vineyard from Walter and Susan Duff. 7 acres of this land is an historic 100 year old vineyard.

2. Walt and Susan Duff do not want to see this property commercially developed and have agreed to sell this property to the Park District. A signed a Purchase Agreement expires on December 31, 2024.

3. The purchase price is $1,100,000.00 - a bargain price for this property!

4. There is a rumor that this property generates $10,000.00 in property taxes. This is not true. The land is currently zoned agricultural. The total property tax paid in 2024 on this acreage was $294.44. (Source: County Auditor’s Office)

5. Eighty-three “Cost of Community Service” studies conducted in 19 states found that tax and other revenues collected from farm, ranch, and forest landowners more than covered the public service costs while development often increases the costs of public services and infrastructure. (Source: American Farmland Trust.)

6. The Park District has placed a levy on this November 2024 ballot, Issue 18.

7. The ten year levy will raise an estimated $152,000.00. The funding will permit the Park District to acquire a loan to purchase the property and provide maintenance of the vineyard.

8. A property owner will pay less than $35.00 per $100,000.00 of the Ottawa County Auditor’s appraisal of their property.

9. The Park District will establish an historical, working vineyard with educational interpretive signage showing how a vineyard is maintained and operated and how the grape industry has been so important to the history of the Islands.

10. Approval of this one mill levy is absolutely crucial to the acquisition of this vineyard by the Park District
