Plans Coming Together For New Clinic In St. John

September 18, 2024 Evan Ellis News

The Port of Whitman County is partnering with Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics in Colfax to build a new clinic in Sr. John.

The port commissioners voted Wednesday to enter into agreements to buy property downtown at Front and Main Streets. The Colfax hospital has been looking at trying to buy the parcels for a new clinic since 2021. Officials determined that the site is contaminated and needs to be cleaned up for a clinic. If the port is able to finalize the purchase the local government agency will seek federal funding to pay for cleaning up the site. The port would then lease the property to WHMC to build the new clinic. The hospital in Colfax already operates a clinic in St. John but officials say it’s overcrowded.

The port would buy the properties from Whitman County Fire District 2 and Dennis and Penny Hinds. The total price for the parcels is 70,000 dollars. Officials will discuss the clinic plan during the St. John Town Council meeting on October 14th. The port hopes to close on the property by October 31st.

WSU Conducts Experiment to Determine Enthusiasm Towards Political Candidates

September 17, 2024 Hayley Brown News

Washington State University conducted an experiment Tuesday with students watching the debate to determine which political party was more fired up about their candidate.

The experiment was used as a way to determine how psychological processes like emotional regulation can influence people’s politics.

Preliminary results of the real-time test showed that involuntary responses were stronger in those of Democratic voters compared to Republican voters.

In support of these findings, WSU also conducted a post-debate survey that revealed that Democratic participants were more likely to donate in support of Kamala Harris’ campaign than Republicans were to Donald Trump.

The experiment conducted media psychophysiology tests on a sample of 31 voters that included 18 Democrats and 13 Republicans, while they watched the debate from a monitored location on the WSU Pullman campus.

The data indicated that Democratic voters viewed Trump as a threat, whereas this was not the case in Republican voters’ perception of Harris.

Participants wore a ring-like sensor, developed by Biopic Systems, which detects sweat gland activity, an involuntary nervous system response.

The sensors provided a physiological indication of activation, or how “fired up” a person becomes, a high level of response would exceed 1.0. Democrats reached this level in response to both Trump and Harris, while Republicans reached a 0.83 in response to Trump and a 0.59 in response to Harris.

The post-debate survey revealed the Republican voters had more mixed feelings about Trump after the debate, whereas Democrats felt more positively about Harris afterwards.

Both parties believed that their candidate had won the debate, however Republicans were less strong in this belief.
