'Music on hold (MOH) is the business practice of playing recorded music to fill the silence that would be heard by telephone callers who have been placed on hold. It is especially common in situations involving customer service.

Among the best known is the largely forgotten "Opus Number One" by Tim Carleton and high-school friend Darrick Deel, who recorded it on a four-track tape recorder in 1989. Deel went on to work for Cisco in building the company's first VoIP phone. When a need for default on hold music came up, he recalled the track he and Carleton had recorded and reached out to Carleton for approval.'

Once again I am thinking about Satie's "Le Fils des Étoiles". $10 to whoever makes a YouTube video that just loops the first 16 bars over and over again.

In my piece on Joséphin Péladan and the Salons de la Rose + Croix, I devote some space to Erik Satie's astonishing score for Péladan's mystical drama Le Fils des Étoiles, which was produced in conjunction with the first Salon...

Check out the NYT's track-by-track breakdown of Maggot Brain. Where else could you see Pierre Schaeffer and Outkast on the same playlist? (Besides WPRB, of course.)

Funkadelic’s third album was a psychedelic blast of freewheeling protest music. As the LP turns 50, we look back at the music that fueled it — and that was inspired by it.

Today I learned that there was an Italian mispress of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures where they accidentally replaced the A-side with the first half of Pere Ubu's The Art of Walking. That must have been a shock!

A great read on why contemporary pop songs have such weird structures.
