Parenting is challenging; it involves letting our kids face life’s tough lessons themselves. In Prescott we are blessed with access to a multitude of natural parks, playgrounds and many excellent youth athletic programs that provide the space for that exploration.
Watching our kids play and push their limits reminds us of the idea Freud highlighted that the “Good Mother” must allow failures. The Good Mother must fail to protect her child from the dangers of the world, in order for the child to develop the strength to navigate the world on their own. It’s in that struggle that strength is built, and in the failures that lessons are learned
For us as parents, our role is not to pave the road for our children but to make sure they have a relationship with God and to equip them with the tools to navigate their own paths. To love them so fiercely that they feel the security to venture, fall, and rise again.
