And another tribute this year...
This time to perhaps the greatest Recording/Mix Engineer that graced this planet, and one that has a discography that spans across time, genre, generations and space....and what amazing “space” Bruce Swedien created, each time as he sat behind the recording console.
Bruce was the Recording and Mix Engineer most credited and famously known for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, which became the highest selling album globally.
5 GRAMMY Awards ensued with a list of esteemed artistry that included:
Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Quincy Jones, Barbara Streisand, Phil Collins, Santana, Donna Summer, Jennifer Lopez, Herbie Hancock, Daryl Hall & John Oates, The Jackson 5, Natalie Cole, Muddy Waters, Barry White, Duke Ellington...
The above is just a partial list that Bruce recorded and mixed.
As a member of the Audio Engineering Society, I had the honor and the pleasure of meeting Mr. Swedien when he participated in the PLATINUM PRODUCERS Panel discussion in New York.
At this session, Bruce brought with him, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” raw session tapes which he played back, revealing his recording techniques and sharing with the audience, rare session discussions with Michael, Quincy, Vincent Price, Rod Temperton as they recorded “Thriller”.
I like many others in the audience, listened with starry-eyes to each word that Mr. Swedien shared, re-living as he took us back to a golden time in a studio in Los Angeles when magical music was so creatively crafted !
Rest in heavenly peace, Mr. Swedien...your magic will breathe life in many more generations yet to come.
