Sunday January 5, 7:00pm, Music without borders is featuring the music of one of Maine's hidden musical talents, Hugh Bowden. He's been playing guitar for ages in the Ellsworth area and often visits Portland to play with Sean Mencher. Together, they're magical. We'll be playing his solo work and some of his jazz material.

The first year of NEXT TO SILENCE featured the genre-defying music from the German record label ECM, and from there I have expanded the scope and content of the material.
This week is the first of what I hope are many shows that feature music that challenges the listener to pay attention to the flow of sounds without giving it a label. The title of this week’s show is "Not Quite Classical.” My hope and intention is that the performances will allow you to drop any preconceived notions of what you will hear.

When describing music as "not quite classical," I mean that this week’s playlist incorporates some elements of classical music—such as orchestration, structure, or harmonic complexity—while also diverging from its traditional norms in notable ways. This might include blending classical techniques with influences from other genres (e.g., jazz, electronic, pop, or folk), experimenting with unconventional forms or instrumentation, or adopting a more accessible, less rigid approach.

What struck me about the 2024 releases from the German record label ECM, a label renowned for its distinctively atmospheric sound and innovative artists, is the remarkable collection of piano-focused releases. Sunday night December 1 at 7:00 Music without borders is headed off to Texas for an evening with Texas legend Doug Sahm. One of the fathers of Tex Mex Music, Doug scored a hit with "Mendicino" back in the late 1960s. He was also part of the Tex Mex supergroup the Texas tornados. Check him out.
