Check out the Monitor’s 10 best books of June, including Frederick Douglass, by Sidney Morrison.
"Frederick Douglass roars from the pages of this meticulous novel, thanks to the voices of his steadfast wife, Anna, and their children, plus confidants, paramours, and even enslavers. A complex man emerges. Proud and persistent, fickle and flawed, he’s inseparable from the era’s tumult and hard-fought triumphs." Grateful to be included in such good company.

I have been working on Frederick Douglass: A Novel, by Sidney Morrison (pub: Juneteenth) for the last two years and didn’t know about his contribution to the Red Cross.

During Black History Month, we are honoring Black men and women whose contributions helped the American Red Cross become the organization that it is today!

Meet Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), a prominent abolitionist, orator and author who met Red Cross founder Clara Barton shortly after the end of the Civil War.
Frederick and Clara developed a friendship, and Clara discussed establishing a Red Cross Association in the United States with him.

The famed abolitionist offered advice and support to Clara in her efforts to gain American acceptance as a member nation of the global Red Cross network. Frederick in his capacity as Register of Deeds for the District of Columbia, signed the original Articles of Incorporation for the Red Cross when they were submitted to the municipal authorities. The articles legally documented the creation of the American Red Cross.

Thank you, Frederick Douglass, for your contributions in helping found our organization.

Advice for long-term bike travel (or life in general) with a partner from K.G. + Ville:

• Communicate! Don’t stuff down irritations and annoyances. Let off steam little by little; don’t bottle things up so you explode and act irrationally. Is easier to get through hard moments - like when you’re hungry and camping in a mud pit while it rains - if you don’t have emotional baggage.

• If you’re frustrated, practice gratitude while pedaling. Lost one thing you’re grateful for each mile; it’s tough to be angry when focusing on what you have and not what you’re lacking.

Posted • Happy birthday to Dr. Martin Luther, King, Jr.! We celebrate the man today—his work, his life, his sacrifice(s)—but lest we forget, his WIFE, the Civil Rights activist, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, was the person who kept his legacy alive, who established the King Memorial in Atlanta, and who is primarily responsible through her years-long work in securing a national celebration of Dr. King’s birthday. This is why I love this picture of the two of them. Remember that legacies don’t come about through magic. Somebody works to keep them alive. So the next time you hear a young Black person say “I am not my ancestors” or “I’m tired of hearing about slavery and Jim Crow” in a derisive way—or the next time you hear somebody say “women should submit; it’s in the Bible”—remind them of that submissive women don’t change history. Mrs. Scott King knew that if we Black folks don’t keep the history going, there won’t be any information to share. ♥️🖤💚

Yes! Go Kristen! I would love nothing more than to see The Chronology of Water by as a movie. Posted • Kristen Stewart has spent five years fruitlessly trying to drum up financing for what she hopes will be her feature directing debut, “The Chronology of Water,” based on the stream-of-consciousness memoir by bisexual author Lidia Yuknavitch.

“I won’t make a-f**king-nother movie until I make this movie,” she declares. Then she sits back and breaks into nervous laughter. “Can’t wait for my agents to read that.”
