The Marshall brothers set up a dairying industry in the 1850s...and the town of Marshall was born. Beginning in the 1870s, Marshall was a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad connecting Cazadero to the Sausalito ferry carrying passengers, lumber, dairy products and produce. This quaint town consisted of the Marshall Hotel, Shields General Merchandise store, a shoe and blacksmith shop, the train depot and a post office which was established February 6, 1872, with Eugene L. White as postmaster.

This charming scene outside the post office reminds us that picking up mail in town was more than an errand – it was a time to take a break and catch up with neighbors, and pick up items at the general store. A reminder of simple pleasures in days gone by…

A note from Ranger Jill:

“Thank you for the many sunrise, sunset, wildflower, redwoods, solstice, equinox, raptor, songbird silhouette, regenerative agriculture, and gratitude outings we've shared! Thank you to those who generously shared their time and shed sweat alongside me in an effort to preserve the beauty and biodiversity of this landscape. Thank you to those who shared your knowledge with me so that I could more fully understand the world around me. Thank you to the many Pole Mountain hikers and runners who inspired me with their fitness, and thank you to all of our partners and neighbors I've met along the way. This land has entwined itself forever in the fabric of my life. I have learned so much and will forever treasure the memories made. The team of people at Wildlands whom I've had the immense pleasure and honor to work alongside have added to my life and well-being immeasurably. A most heart-felt and teary-eyed thank you.”
