Inside Urban Alchemy
We just spent the week down in Los Angeles taking an in-depth look at Urban Alchemy, a large, California-based homeless services nonprofit known for operating mass city-sanctioned campsites. We got an inside look at one of their sites in the South Central neighborhood. The group just agreed to a five year $50 million contract with the City of Portland to operate up to five of six similar planned sites set to open starting this summer. For those who live in the sites here in LA, they say it's a second chance at life after experiencing homelessness. But while Urban Alchemy has helped hundreds of people living on the streets, questions surround the organization because of legal issues at other sites, and concerns of nearby small business owners and longtime neighborhood residents. Our special report for FOX 12 Oregon
