Portlander Shot By Security Guard With Alleged White Nationalist Ties Calls on DA to Convict

Kolby Ross is accusing the county prosecutor's office of mishandling a case that let a shooter walk freeIt's been four months since Kolby Ross was shot in the gut and leg by a security guard in downtown Portland while walking past a club doorway. While his wounds are slowly healing, Ross' pursuit for justice following the shooting—which killed a 19-year-old acquaintance named Lauren Abbott Jr.—is far from over.

"[Abbott] can’t speak for himself, so I want to be there for him," Ross, a 23-year-old father of three, told the Mercury Monday. "The least I can do is use my voice."

On Tuesday, Ross called on the Multnomah County District Attorney's office to consider pressing new charges against Jascha Manny, the security guard who fired at him. Ross is accusing the county prosecutor's office of wrongly pushing a grand jury to drop the initial charges filed against Manny, which Ross contends makes Abbott and himself look like the criminals.

10/19/2022

Two members of one of the Portland-metro area's longest standing gangs were found guilty of racketeering charges — including murder, robbery and drug dealing — and will face potential life in federal prison for acts that spanned decades.

Lorenzo Laron Jones, 49, and Ronald Clayton Rhodes, 37, both of Portland, were found guilty Wednesday, Oct. 19, by a federal jury in Portland for racketeering conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeering, and using and carrying a firearm during a violent crime. Their actions took place in Portland and East Multnomah County.

"Prosecuting violent street gangs as racketeering enterprises is a powerful law enforcement tool we believe will reduce shootings in Portland and begin to restore the safe, vibrant community the public deserves," said Steven Mygrant, chief of the Narcotics and Criminal Enterprises Unit of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon.

"When groups like this flood local streets with violence, the most effective response is for (…) a team of law enforcement to come together and leverage our most sophisticated investigative and prosecutorial methods," added Kieran Ramsey, special agent in charge of the FBI Portland Field Office.

According to court documents the Hoovers are a criminal street gang operating in Oregon. They originated in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and established a presence in Portland in the early 1980s. The gang has a loose hierarchical structure in which members have different amounts of influence based on age and activity. To maintain status, they must carry out violence, and are self-described as "everybody killers."

Jones and Rhodes are longtime Hoover members who together have 30 years of activity. They mentored younger members and new recruits, and directed them to conduct business and violence on behalf of the gang.

During the trial Jones was found guilty of murdering Wilbert Butler in 2017. He was also found to have engaged in multiple attempted murders, illegally possessing fi****ms as a convicted felon, and distributing controlled substances. Rhodes was found guilty of participating in the murder of Kyle Polk in 2015.

In November 2019 a federal grand jury in Portland returned a 13-count superseding indictment charging Jones, Rhodes and two accomplices with the various racketeering charges.

The pair will be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Michael McShane at a later date.

The FBI, Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and Gresham Police Department teamed-up for the investigation.

09/07/2022

Oregon’s first federal racketeering trial against street-level gang members got underway Tuesday with jurors hearing starkly different accounts of the Hoover gang.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Leah Bolstad described members as ruthless killers, armed robbers and money-flashing drug dealers who are enemies “with just about everyone else” and have worked to make their gang the most violent and powerful in Portland.Defense lawyers for the two men standing trial countered that while their clients both identify as Hoovers, the gang is a loose-knit group largely made up of young Black men from poor, broken families striving for support and camaraderie.

They carry guns for protection in dangerous neighborhoods and any crimes they may have committed stem from personal vendettas or impulsive acts in their own interests, not for the benefit of the gang, the defense lawyers argued.

“Many young Black men have identified as members of a gang, but mere membership does not establish they entered a racketeering conspiracy,” said Bert Dupre III, one of two lawyers representing Ronald Clayton Rhodes.

Rhodes, 37, known as “Big Fly,” and Lorenzo Laron Jones, 49, known as “Low Down,” each face charges of participating in a racketeering conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeering and using a firearm in a violent crime.

Between the two men, they’re accused of committing three murders with the goal of gaining increased standing in the gang.

08/01/2022

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Police in Vancouver, Washington, are investigating a double homicide at a house party as a gang-related shooting, according to court documents.

When officers arrived at about 1:20 a.m. July 17, they found 19-year-old Alexander Castagnoli of Portland, Oregon, dead inside the house, The Columbian reported. Officers learned that Amadou Keita, 18, of Portland, died on his way to or at a hospital, from gunshot wounds, according to a search warrant affidavit filed last week in Clark County Superior Court.

Two additional gunshot victims, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police have not released the identities of the two wounded victims or updated their conditions.

One witness told police she heard someone ask, “Who’s a Hoover?” followed by gunshots. Hoover is the name of a Portland-area gang, according to the affidavit.

Investigators say one of the gunshot victims is a member of the rival gang, Six Deuce Crips. The victim declined to answer detectives’ questions about the shooting, according to court records.

The teen’s mother told investigators she overheard him talking on his phone about the shooting, and she believed Hoovers were behind her son’s shooting, the affidavit says.

Witnesses have provided limited suspect information to police, and Vancouver police shared photos of witnesses earlier this week asking for help identifying them.

07/28/2022

Police identified the man and woman killed in a shooting in Southeast Portland’s Buckman neighborhood as 34-year-old Dante Emanuel Hall and 24-year-old Victoria Brown.

Nearly four years ago, Hall was the victim of a high-profile shooting when, in September 2018, Patrick Kimmons shot Hall in the leg in a parking lot at Southwest Fourth Avenue and Harvey Milk Street. Kimmons then ran toward police with a gun, police said, and officers shot and killed Kimmons. Hall had prior felony convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Hall and Brown died this month by gunshot, and their deaths were declared homicides, police said.

Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots in the 2600 block of Southeast Belmont Street around 2:50 a.m. July 17. They arrived to find Hall dead at the scene, and Brown with serious injuries. Brown was taken to the hospital, but died of her injuries, police said.

Police have not identified any suspects.

A nearby neighbor, Jeff Halcott, told The Oregonian/OregonLive that he heard eight to nine gunshots. Halcott said he called the police after stepping out of his apartment and hearing cries for help.

He believes the shooting took place at a parking lot across from The Vern and the Belmont Comprehensive Treatment Center, where lines of police tape were left in a dumpster the following day.

Hall’s and Brown’s deaths mark the 50th and 51st homicides in Portland this year. There have been 52 homicides so far this year, compared to 92 in 2021.

Investigators ask anyone with information to contact Det. Joe Corona at 503-823-0508, [email protected], or Det. Jennifer Hertzler at 503-823-1040, [email protected].

Burgerville Workers of Color Call for Resignation of Manager for Racist ActionsBURGERVILLE WORKERS UNITED
People of color working at the Oregon Convention Center Burgerville location are lobbying to have their store manager removed for his allegedly racist actions.

On July 15, Burgerville Workers United—the union representing the chain's staff—filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) signed by almost all workers of color at the Convention Center store alleging racist harassment from the store's general manager. The manager has only worked at the Burgerville location for four months, yet workers say he quickly created a "hostile environment" with the way he treats his employees of color. Workers say they've made complaints about his actions, yet have seen no improvement—which is why they are motivated to alert the NLRB.

According to a union press release, the petition was inspired after an incident earlier this month involving a Black employee named Arieanna. On July 5, Arieanna allegedly came to the defense of another coworker of color who was being mocked by an irate customer. This action only caused the customer to become more angry and threatening toward both employees of color. The store manager allegedly witnessed the entire incident, and didn't intervene for what felt like an irresponsible amount of time.

According to Arieanna's coworker Nora, who she spoke with after the incident, it was a traumatizing experience. The impact was compounded by the fact that this manager had allegedly made racist comments about her and Black customers previously.

"She said how wildly unsafe she felt," said Nora, recounting the conversation. "She didn’t trust coming in to work the next day. "

Arieanna was placed on leave after the encounter and ultimately fired on July 18.

"When put in a hostile, unsafe, violent workplace, it’s impossible to make the right decisions," said Arieanna in the press release. "I felt like I was set up to fail."The union has filed a grievance against Burgerville, alleging that Arieanna was put in an unsafe workplace.

Another Black worker named Mack alleged he had been retaliated against by this same manager, after being fired for taking several days off to help his wife during a medical emergency in June. Workers believe the manager has different workplace expectations for staff based on their race.

"He has a different, lower amount of patience, sympathy for Black and brown staff than for white staff," said one staff member at the Convention Center store, who is not identified in the press release.

Store workers are calling both for Burgerville to re-hire Arieanna and fire the Convention Center store's manager. Burgerville's corporate office did not respond to the Mercury's request for comment on the demands.

This isn't the first time this store's location has been accused of retaliating against its staff. In March 2019, shortly after the Convention Center store workers filed to join the Burgerville Workers Union, managers suspended two staffers, fired one worker, and handed out dozens of smaller penalties against employees. Since 2018, five local Burgerville stores have voted to join the union, which is the first fast-food union to be federally recognized in the country.
