A Sense of Familiarity in this Year’s Wagon Wheel Game

By Sports Writer Kinzie Davis

A tradition since 1986 between the West Texas A&M Buffs and your Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds

On Saturday, November 4th, the two teams will face off again to see who will charge the hill and take home the beloved Wagon Wheel! The current record is 17-18 in West Texas's favor. There is a strong sense of rivalry coming into this year's game. The elements contributing to this are the Greyhounds stole back the wheel last year, there is an opportunity for the Greyhounds to tie up the record, and the head coaches have a long history in Portales.

Last year, the Greyhounds beat West Texas with a wild ending. They were down by 4 with 1:39 left on the clock when they had a 75-yard drive down the field and then converted on a 37-yard pass into the endzone. The stadium was in shock! This was the first time the Greyhounds had defeated the Buffs in four years. To make the victory even sweeter, this was the first Wagon Wheel Game played inside the Buff's New Stadium. Not to mention, it was the Buff's last home game, senior night, and the odds were in their favor. The Buffs might have a bitter taste still in their mouths from that loss.

Both teams come in this year with comparable match-ups. Currently, Eastern is 4-5, and West Texas is 3-6. A Unique element to this year's match-up is the coaching staff. The Buffs' head Coach, Josh Lynn, is not a stranger to Portales. He had the pleasure of being the head coach of the Greyhounds for five seasons and is an Eastern Alumni. He played for the university from 1997 to 2000. Josh Lynn has a long history with the Wagon Wheel and knows what it takes to win, but do his new recruits understand what it takes?

One thing is certain: Kelly Lee and the experienced Greyhounds know what it takes to keep the Wagon Wheel at their house. Lee has a long history of coaching the Greyhounds. He spent five years as their offensive coordinator, creating one of the most dominant run games and efficient passing games in the Lone Star Conference. From 2017-2020, he served as the head coach and recently returned this season.

It is evident that there is a long history of the wagon wheel in both coaching staffs and a deep rivalry for both teams. This year, the game is to be played right here in Portales. This offers the perfect opportunity for the Greyhounds to tie the record and keep the Wagon Wheel. The hounds look forward to seeing the stands filled with their fans this Saturday at noon!

The Haunting History of Halloween

Written By Staff Writer: Madison Lawson

Remember smelling the crisp fall air? Lingering excitement about wearing a new costume? The adrenaline right before adventuring around neighborhoods for candy? This is the feeling that Hallow’s Eve brings to most people. This is a time of the year when children and adults can have fun. Some adults enjoy this time to dress up and express their creativity for one night of the year and use this opportunity to have genuine fun with peers. Many adults enjoy Halloween because they can spend quality time with their children and make core memories. Most children enjoy seeing Halloween décor and seeing their friends or even random people dressed up in scary or extravagant costumes.

This day was originally a Celtic festival of Samhain, usually celebrated between October 31st and November 1st. People in Ireland believed that during these two days, spirits could roam free between the spirit world and reality. During this festival, people would dress up and build bonfires to ward off these evil spirits. In the eighth century, November first became All Saint’s Day, which upheld the traditional Samhain celebrations.

As time evolved, this holiday became less religious or spiritual and more of a national activity for children and adults in America. Throughout the 1950s, teens were known for being mischievous and causing disruption. This is when people in America started the tradition of Trick-Or-Treating on this day. Adults encouraged community activities like this to keep communication and connection among each other. People were almost always excited about dressing up, and this increased the popularity of more creative masks being manufactured in the 1960s. In the 70s and 80s, costumes became more gruesome as horror movies rose in popularity. This led to the classic vampire, zombie, and werewolf costumes that many people still love and wear today.

Building haunted houses and creating ultra-spooky attractions is more of a modern tradition that people of all ages can enjoy. Halloween is when most people want to be scared and voluntarily submit themselves to being terrified in various ways. These types of events are filled with people who are dedicated to helping others enjoy the frightful night.

Halloween can be celebrated in numerous different ways. What matters is that people can express their love for the holiday with others in safe, creative, and memorable ways.

This year, we “plan to grow ‘The Chase’ on all platforms and really make it an integral part of the culture here on campus”, said Kaylee, our Chief Editor. Personally, I am extremely excited for the future of ‘The Chase’- we have a really amazing team this year, and I hope we can set a legacy for the underclassmen who will take over in the years to come.

At Prehistory Day 2023, visitors will get to experience firsthand some of the traditional techniques used by these ancient humans, providing a valuable learning opportunity and perhaps a new perspective on the vast differences between ancient and modern life.

Visitors to Prehistory Day will enjoy special opportunities to engage in a wide variety of activities to simulate the lives of the people who once inhabited what is now New Mexico. Craftsmanship activities including leather crafts, yucca crafts, and pottery will be available, and visitors will get to make their own necklaces out of beads made of bison teeth.

In addition, visitors may take part in activities which represent the vigorous hunter-gatherer lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants of New Mexico. These will include flint knapping (the practice of chipping stones into usable tools and weapons) and corn grinding, as well as an atlatl-throwing activity, simulating the way these ancient hunters were able to hunt and kill beasts much larger, faster and more powerful than themselves.

Prehistory Day 2023 will mark the debut of Blackwater Draw’s new audio tour, which has been in the works for some time. Visitors may enjoy a tour of the facility’s excavation area with the director, and learn more through discussions with experts and students. There will also be face painting, a photo booth, a scavenger hunt and a raffle to participate in.

Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark and Museum will open at 9:00 PM on Saturday, April 22. Demonstrations will be held between 10:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Admission is free and families are welcome. If you have questions, call 575-562-2202.

It’s that time of year- the ENMU Student Government Association is holding elections! Up for re-election is President Tamia Smith, and for Vice President, we have two candidates, Andres Chavez and Micaela Vigil.

Tamia is a senior Criminal Justice major. She loves her job as student body president “fighting and advocating for ENMU students”. In her next term, she hopes to get students more involved and have a better sense of unity throughout the campus. She is hoping her Vice President will be a great leader who will be able to handle the responsibility that comes with the title, on and off campus.

Andres Chavez is a junior studying Broadcast Journalism. Even with the competition as tough as it is, Andres had only good things to say about his opponent. “She would be a great fit for SGA Vice President. She brings a lot of great qualities to the table. That being said, I hope I get picked because it would be an honor to give back to the campus that has shaped me.” He hopes to be an advocate for bringing life back into campus. “We are finally getting numbers back up after the Covid pandemic, and I hope to help continue to grow them”.

Micaela Vigil is a senior theatre major with a minor in business. She wants to be a voice for those without one through her passion for acting. Micaela says, “I have a strong and loud voice, and I want to use it for good”. She also had only the best to say about her opponent. “I believe he would be great as SGA Vice President, and I know whoever wins will do their best for Eastern”.

A lot of love for each other from each candidate- truly nice to see SGA in such caring hands. On April 17th, an email with the link to vote will be sent to everyone’s ENMU email addresses. Please help these candidates and get involved!
