Didn't realize he was a hometown legend until I was in high school when saw him in person. Happy Birthday, sir!

Avery Brooks turns 76 today. Born in Evansville, Indiana. He and his family moved to Gary, Indiana when he was still a child. Brooks attended Indiana University and Oberlin College but completed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University. He was the first African American to receive an MFA in acting and directing from Rutgers.

Brooks’ first significant role was as Hawk in the detective series Spenser: For Hire (Amazon Prime Video) which is based on a mystery series by Robert Parker. The show was so popular that there was short spinoff series called A Man Called Hawk. He reprised his Hawk role for four Spenser television movies. In the late 90s, he appeared in the movies The Big Hit (Hulu) and American History X (Max).

By far Brooks’ most famous role was as Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Netflix) for seven seasons. He was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series in 1997-1998 and nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television. Today is Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s 74th birthday. Born in Tokyo to a Japanese actress and Japanese-American father who served in the United States Army, Tagawa was raised in various cities before settling in Southern California. He attended Duarte High School and then the University of Southern California.

Tagawa’s breakthrough as an actor came when he portrayed Eu**ch Chang in 1987’s The Last Emperor (Apple TV). In 1989, he portrayed an undercover agent of the Hong Kong Narcotics Board in the James Bond movie Licence to Kill (Apple TV). In 1991, he played Yakuza boss Yoshida in Showdown in Little Tokyo (YouTube). His other movies include 1993’s Rising Sun (YouTube), 1995’s Mortal Kombat (Amazon Prime Video) where he played the iconic Shang Tsung, 2001’s Pearl Harbor (Disney+), 2005’s Elektra (Apple TV), 2007’s Balls of Fury (Apple TV), 2009’s Tekken (Amazon Prime Video), and 2013’s 47 Ronin (YouTube).
