Just back from two days "on the road" with former Young Dubliners Bren Holmes and Bob Boulding, where they were very well received. The short tour winds up at Rainshadow Recording this evening for another Live in the Studio session. There is still space available, so come join us! In January, Brother Townsend came back to the studio to record a live show with a small audience. The tracks sounded great and, as one might imagine, the energy associated with playing for an audience resulted in inspired performances. Since then, we have done similar sessions with Simon Lynge, John “Greyhound” Maxwell and Alice Howe & Freebo, all with fine results. John’s live CD is in production now and Alice & Freebo’s tracks are being mixed now.

On Sunday, July 21st, Bren Holmes, with Bob Boulding, both former longtime members of the Young Dubliners come in for a live session. Tickets are available at rainshadowtickets.com. This is a great way to attend a show - in an intimate, great sounding space and you get to be part of the record!

Sunday’s show is at 7:30 (doors at 7). I hope you can join us. As this is a much smaller space, tickets are limited. Hope to see you this weekend.

I have two special nights of live recording coming up Friday May 31st and Saturday June 1st at Rainshadow Recording in Port Townsend. This obit might not be on many’s radar. The great fiddle player, Gene Elders, has died. Gene was based in Austin and played on the road with both George Strait and Lyle Lovett’s Large Band. He has also played on many, many records including the still unreleased Willis Alan Ramsey record. Gene also put out a number of fine records with his wife, singer-songwriter Bett Elders. He will be greatly missed. Thank you to Lee Sklar for posting.

My heart breaks today at the news of the passing of Gene Elders. First worked with Gene in Lyle Lovetts band and he was a mainstay of George Straits band for many years. A brilliant musicians, photographer and all around man. Here he is with me and Russ on tour. Gene was truly one of the best! Last night, Rayna Gellert accompanied Joachim Cooder on violin and viola. She used a Bartlett Audio mic under the bridge and it was, perhaps, the most natural sound I have heard from a portable, close mic on a fiddle... and at less than 1/3 the price of the "industry dominating" DPA. Highly recommended!

We make stage-floor microphones for amplifying actors on stage. They are far simpler to use, and less costly, than headworn wireless mics. We also make clip-on mics for acoustic instruments for sound reinforcement at gigs. They sound natural, better than a pickup. Easy temporary mounting and low fee...

Congratulations to Steve Genewick on his Grammy win for engineering the Best Large Jazz Ensemble record, “Basie Swings the Blues.”

Steve was at Jazz Port Townsend and Rainshadow Recording a few years ago to conduct a workshop on Recording the Jazz Endemble, a role we hope to reprise. Steve has also recorded the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra - John Clayton is the longtime Artistic Director for Jazz Port Townsend and Jeff Hamilton is a longtime faculty member. As a staff engineer at Capitol and Al Schmitt’s right hand man for more than twenty years, he has all worked on many Diana Krall records. Steve has also become one of the most respected Dolby Atmos remix engineers in the industry.
