Florida Residents - Did you know that pre-sales for the specialty Highwaymen License Plate are available now? The plate pays tribute to the loose collective of African American artists who, beginning in the 1950s, sold their paintings to eager customers far and wide from the trunks of cars.

Each plate will portray a vivid painting of the recognizable and beloved Royal Poinciana tree by original Highwaymen artist Alfred Hair (1941-1970). 3,000 pre-sale vouchers must be sold by October 2023 before the new specialty license plate will be manufactured and available to Florida's motorists. While sea turtle nesting seasons doesn't officially begin until March 1, apparently this Leatherback couldn't wait as she decided to lay her eggs on one of our beaches on Feb. 24. St. Lucie County officials ask residents, businesses and visitors to help us protect these threaten and endangered species by practicing sea turtle-friendly habits such as proper beachfront lighting and removing beach chairs, tables and umbrellas from the beach at night. Last year was a positive year for sea turtle nesting in St. Lucie County with 2,619 nests being laid – a 7.5% increase over 2020. Loggerheads produced 2,193 nests in 2021, followed by Green Turtles with 381 and Leatherbacks with 45 nests. Help us keep the trend going in the right direction.

Due to a Fort Pierce Utilities Authority main water line break, St. Lucie County Utility customers in Indian River Estates, North Hutchinson Island, along the Okeechobee/Midway Road corridor and from the Treasure Coast International Airport and Business Park north along U.S. 1 to the county line to 25th Street are under a boil water notice until further notice. The water outage is impacting roughly 5,000 St. Lucie County Utilities customers.
Once water is restored, those impacted residents will be under a 72-hour precautionary, boil water advisory for any water used for drinking or cooking. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. Bottled water may be used as an alternative.

Throwback Thursday and continuing to celebrate 100 Years of the Fort Pierce Jetty Inlet. This is an aerial photo of the original inlet located near Pepper Park on North Hutchinson Island. This narrow passage which was often closed, was one of the reasons that Crayola Crayon inventor, Edwin Binney spearheaded the dredging of the new inlet.
