Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (FAU CARD) is now inviting prospective/current first responders' trainers to enroll in our Train-the-Trainers first responders training program focused on autism and intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Our newly developed curriculum is designed to enhance the teaching methods of site trainers, focusing on increasing interactions with autistic and intellectually/developmentally delayed individuals during emergencies. The training covers behavior management techniques, de-escalation strategies, alternative communication methods, and more.

The course is divided into two parts: Part 1 with our trainer Dr. Kim Spence or Dennis Debbaudt, and Part 2, where the prospective or current trainer will have the opportunity to train three or more first responders within their department (part 2 is supervised by an FAU team member). Upon completion, certificates will be provided to authenticate the training. Both parts of the training will be half-day sessions (4-hours).

All materials are provided, and the training is free for all first responders. Part 1 and 2 of the training is on site and we are flexing with our training schedule. This session can be scheduled as soon as September 2024.

Eligible participants include active-duty police officers/sheriffs, firefighters, emergency medical specialists, police department and emergency medical specialists, or volunteer emergency medical specialists in Florida.

The second option in the study is complete this survey about their personal experiences with individuals with ASD/IDD. Nationwide and Florida-only survey links are below.

An Awesome Community Partnership Opportunity for the Autism & Law Enforcement Communities!

May the 4th Be For YOU!

To promote acceptance, inclusion, and understanding of individuals on the autism spectrum, the University of Michigan-Flint is sponsoring a free event called Officer Friendly Day on May 4th from 1:00-3:00pm. The event is geared toward individuals with autism and their families/caregivers. It is an opportunity for individuals on the spectrum and their families to build positive relationships with law enforcement officers before an emergency occurs and have all their safety related questions answered.

This event is for children, adolescents, and adults on the spectrum! Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with law enforcement officers, explore their vehicles, engage in fun activities, and participate in simulated traffic stop experiences to practice what to do if they get pulled over.

Please feel free to share the flyer with anyone you think may be interested in attending!
