A packed crowd filled the H.J.M. Elementary School cafeteria Monday night as community members from Port O’Connor and Seadrift voiced opposition to proposed school closures and grade-level consolidations.

After nearly two hours of public comment, the Calhoun County ISD Board of Trustees voted to indefinitely postpone plans to close Port O’Connor Elementary School and merge Seadrift School’s seventh- and eighth-grade classes with Travis Middle School.

Parents in Port O’Connor and Seadrift are organizing opposition to proposed Calhoun County ISD plans that would close Port O’Connor Elementary School and move Seadrift seventh- and eighth-grade students to Travis Middle School.

Twenty-nine parents gathered June 10 at King Fisher Beach Park to discuss their concerns, share information and prepare to address the school board ahead of a June 15 meeting where trustees could take action on the proposals.
