Another trip to Las Vegas led to Kyle and I climbing a route called Cat in the Hat up Mescalito. Super super fun route with amazing climbing! Strangely enough, as I climbed up to this spot on the side of the cliff close to 550’ off the ground, I looked over and saw another climber. I felt like I had met this dude before and reactively hollered out, “are you Gary?” Sure enough, it was a super cool dude I climbed with a couple years ago! He caught this super sick image of Kyle heading out on the short traverse pitch. Thanks for the capture! Also, thanks to Kyle for hammering out the last pitch of the climb and for another great trip to .

Last month, and I went out to Vegas to climb some rocks and go to an antique motorcycle auction with my dad and his friends. I brought Zack up his first multi pitch route, Solar Slab Gully, in . We had a blast cruising up a super fun mellow climb that ends on Solar Slab Terrace where we ate chicken tenders and cake from that morning. A great way to save money while in Vegas is to stop at right before entering the canyon, grab some delicious carrot cake and eat it while the sun comes up over the desert. Way better and way cheaper than any of the breakfasts your going to find on the strip! Pretty epic! Here’s to more good times! Cheers!

Here is a picture of Brian trying out a bit of mixed climbing last week at in a little spot out in the woods called the Wolf’s Den. Though this isn’t some of the wildly over hanging mixed routes found in other places around the country and world, it does give you a bit of fun while scratching your tools around hoping for something to hook them into. This was a slight variation to the route that slides up the chimney / chock stone and instead heads up and then right hoping to climb the small pillar without ruining it for everyone else. Also worth noting, this was Brian’s second day ice climbing! He crushed it with solid movement while working his way up the rock and ice. Super rad dude!

Another great day at from last week. , Brian and myself hiked out along the lakeshore trail in search of big ice. With so many climbers coming up to Munising to climb for the fest, it gets pretty hard to find climbable ice that isn’t already snagged by other groups. We started a touch later than we had originally planned but our efforts paid off by hiking 4 miles out to this climb called Strawberry Daze. I had rappelled into some other spots hoping to to find big pillars of ice reaching down towards the dark waters of Mama Superior but only managed to find a 6’ blob of ice hanging a couple hundred feet over the edge. After hiking past classics like Sweet Mother Moses, Giddy Up and Dairyland we managed to find this beauty of a climb! On top of that we ran into .in.mountains , and Mark Synnott] and managed to share a bit of ice with them. The wind was ripping across the lake and managed to blow dirt, snow and the rope up the frozen pitch of ice we climbed. Alpine conditions for sure as Zack and I huddled on an icy ledge waiting for the wind to stop barraging us! Good times for sure!

Thanks to Mark Synnott] for the photo and the company down on the ice.

We have been completely slammed with calls and treatments for Gypsy Moth caterpillars this past month. These nasty things have been eating every leaf off of most White Oaks in our area and have now moved onto every other species of tree. When trees are completely defoliated (all leaves eaten) they can’t photosynthesize the suns rays into food. They also become stressed and use extra energy just trying to stay alive. On top of all the stress to the trees, the caterpillars eat all the leaves and then p**p it out onto your vehicles, houses, decks and even your summer picnics! Please let us know if you need help protecting your trees from Gypsy Moths!

This nasty White Oak has been dead for who knows how long. We were hired to come in and reduce the dead limbs over our client’s home and property. Mega stressful with super super delicate picks to reduce the chance of any limbs breaking or shattering while being removed. Some days really aren’t as fun as others...😬

Some days are harder than others! We removed 2 trees for the City of Port Huron yesterday at Lakeside Beach. One was a dead Burr Oak that was looming over the splash of and the other was a majorly declining Burr Oak over the new pavilion. Loading wood at the end of the day made for a great time to sit back and enjoy the scenery!

We just planted this nice little flowering Cherry. The first night it was in the ground a deer snuck up and tried to chomp the top off! This is my first attempt at grafting a tree. The goal is to reattach the broken piece to the piece that is still in the ground and have the live tissues reconnect. Hoping for the best!

We made the long drive to Dearborn Heights yesterday to remove a previously topped and now rotten Maple. Thankfully the job was a “leave all” which means all the wood and brush stayed on site! This log was about 30’ in diameter and about 6’ long. Since the bar on Grab Axe is only 25” it needed to be cut from both sides so the cuts bypassed then picked off the trunk. Fun times!

It’s always fun to bring in other climbers to change things up a bit! Here is taking the top out of a Silver Maple that was removed from a backyard. Seeing the action in slow mo helps demonstrate the forces and physics involved with rigging down a tree with ropes! If any companies are looking to pick up a contract climber for future projects, Joe is one of the best in the business!

You guys offer stump removal right?!? Lol. This tree is a great reminder that nature will always find a way to fill in. No matter what we think, nature is a force all of it’s own and help nurture us or destroy us. Pretty cool tree regardless taking back what it wants!

Just some making some sawdust fly! We removed a massively decayed Silver Maple today with the Grab Axe. It took some super delicate controls to fish some of the broken dead tops out of the rest of the tree. Here you can see Grab Axe chomping down on one of the logs we cut from the ground.

Yesterday was a fun one! We made quick work of this Willow reduction. Then got the dump truck stuck, then got it more stuck, then finally managed to coerce it out of the quagmire it was in. Finally, we made it to the next job to remove a declining Douglas Fir at the end of the day in the rain. Some days are more fun than others... 😎

To follow up on the previous post, THIS is what we found at the top of the Waterfall Tree! There was a small hole roughly 200’ off the ground in the dead top of the tree. We radioed down to our ground crew to send up our headlamps. They were obviously confused but sent them up. Slowly I eased my way into the small space and it opened up to a completely hollow tree! I lowered myself 25’ down into the dark gaping abyss that lurked below me waiting to nudge into a pterodactyl skull or something else prehistoric! Wayne Ellison then climbed through the hole and I captured this image of him silhouetted perfectly against the interior decay of the tree. Probably one of the cooler experiences of my life.

So it was almost 5 years ago that I had the opportunity to climb and collect cuttings from some of the largest trees in the world. This photo was take at the base of the Waterfall Tree, a Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), as I was about to ascend into the tree. We set a rope around 175’ off the ground and rope walked up to that point. From there to the top, another 50’, it was a mix of rock climbing, aid climbing, rope access techniques and some badass tree climbing! The entire top of the tree is dead but the bottom was thriving at the time we climbed it.

Any guesses as to what amazing thing we found at the top? I’ll touch on that in the next post!

Learning to weld was one of the best things I’ve tried to do in the past year. In no way am I a pro at it, but my welds hold and they make it so we can do cool stuff at work. Like make these cool teeth for our mini skid steer! These help hold really big logs in the grapple instead of the log falling out! And Winnie the Mini looks pretty mean showing off her fangs!

This sucker was pretty hefty! This was an emergency job that came up today for the City of Port Huron. We came in and hammered this Maple out to reduce the risk it was creating to everyone around it.
