Buildings on the horizon. Micro plastic in flesh. Trash from the Anthropocene scatters like fall leaves. Since 1951 all of our tissues and organs have been exposed to nuclear fallout from weapons tested in the atmosphere. We evolved from nature. Now nature lives in a world created by us. Coyotes, crows, and raccoons eat from restaurant dumpsters. Waves toss candy wrappers on tires half buried in sand. This is the natural world. Birds build nests with shreds of a blue tarp and filters from ci******es. A song bird sits on a fence off I96 in Detroit. Wildlife is adapting to its new environment. I think a photographer can take photos that show the reality of a situation and make us confront uncomfortable ideas. Sometimes that can catalyze change. Not this photo. I crop out houses. I use the edge of the frame to block the garbage floating in the water, the fishing boat, the man made ….. anything. This photograph is not nature photography but a photo of what I have evolved to want in nature, in order to exploit it. I want to see landscapes without any signs of human activity not because it’s beautiful but because it means the wildlife hasn’t been hunted to the point of extirpation. In this environment humans will have a better chance of killing unsuspecting animals. Unspoiled landscapes hold the promise of things not yet hunted, not yet conquered. What I see as a beautiful landscape is my evolution driving me into new places. This is not a photograph of nature, it's a search image for exploitation. A reminder that I am an animal that no longer lives in the natural world.

We just completed a really fun and interesting project that you can see now on the FOX 2 Detroit website.

Several sinkholes in northeast Michigan spawned from the vast cave network underneath the region. A FOX 2 photographer ventured into these columns, finding plants and organisms found nowhere else in Michigan.

This is a nature video I did for 9 and 10 news but it never aired because I moved to Detroit and started a new job. It got lost in the commotion. After a month in Detroit it is a nice reminder of the natural beauty Michigan has to offer. This video is a look at some of the struggles sandhill cranes face when they reproduce in the spring.
