North and South Pontotoc kicked off their cross country seasons this past Saturday at New Albany’s NMPHC Cross Country Classic.

The Pontotoc county youth court will soon have a building of their own to meet and do business. The building that once housed the justice court has been renovated to accommodate the youth court. It is located southeast of the Chancery Building.

Tour de Bodock bike ride director Bob McGee said that registration for the Saturday, September 14, event is currently ahead of this time last year, and that 2023 event attracted 308 registrants from seven states.

South Pontotoc volleyball extended their winning streak to six games with their 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-11, 25-13) of the Falkner Lady Eagles last Monday night. Senior Bailey Whitlock and junior Anniston Wiggins continue to dominate on the court, helping the Lady Cougars get back to .500 on the season.

All three schools will officially kick off football season this Friday night, but fans got to see an early preview last Friday night. South and Pontotoc each hosted their own jamborees, while North traveled to Kossuth. Saltillo dealt the Warriors a 7-0 loss, while the Vikings came up short 14-0 against the Aggies. South Pontotoc played two games, remaining deadlocked with Vardaman 0-0 but putting up a 14-0 victory over Hatley.

At their August 22 meeting the Pontotoc Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a low and best bid of $2,920,000 from Ho**er Construction Co., of Thaxton, to construction a new downtown Pontotoc Fire Station.

Five defendants pled guilty and were sentenced as the July/August term of Pontotoc County Circuit Court concluded August 9.

Because of the Labor Day holiday, the Progress will be having early deadlines. Early advertising and copy deadlines for the September 4 paper will be Wednesday and Thursday, August 28, 29; due to the Progress office being closed for Monday.

Deadlines for the September 4 paper are as follows: legal notices are due by 12 noon Wednesday, August 28; classified ads and advertisements as well as all community correspondents copy and announcements are due by 11 a.m. Thursday, August 29.

The cast has been called, and there are still speaking parts and several chorus style singing parts needed for the Pontotoc Community Theater’s fall production at The Main.

This past summer the Pontotoc County Library and the fair board sponsored a coloring contest for three different age groups awarding prizes in each. Those who won the prizes were Casey Copeland who was awarded her prize from Cassie Hamilton, Mia Baldwin and Miles Pettit.

The town of Ecru board is looking into creating a welcome center in the old clinic on Main Street with the help of monies from the legislature. “All of them are fine with us doing this,” said Mayor Mike Nesbit at the August board meeting. Once the plans are organized there will be more details on this project.
