Barging is the most efficient and environmentally friendly mode of cargo transportation. In 2017, it would have taken 35,140 rail cars or 135,000 semi-trucks to move the cargo that was barged on the Snake River.

Veteran’s Day Celebration

By Charlotte Baker

POMEROY–The School District will hold their Annual Veteran’s Day program, open to the public, in the High School gymnasium on November 8, at 9 a.m.
Elementary students will sing patriotic songs, a slide presentation of local military honorees will be made and at least four local veterans will receive Quilts of Valor as part of the Veteran’s Day tradition.
This program gives students, staff, the community, and area residents a time to honor local veterans and pay tribute to those who gave their lives for protecting our country, liberty, and freedoms.
If you are a veteran, or know of a veteran whose picture may not be in the slide presentation, please drop off a picture at the Pomeroy High School by November 1 so it may be included in the presentation.

East Washingtonian update--

Schoesler statement on Democrats’ new bill raising property taxes

OLYMPIA… State Sen. Mark Schoesler, R-Ritzville, issued this statement after Senate Democrats introduced Senate Bill 5770, which would triple the annual growth rate of both state and local property taxes in Washington.

“The Senate Democrats’ bill to raise property taxes is just another example of their incurable addiction for more money. Their operating budget this year is the most expensive in state history and calls for record spending in virtually all areas. Their cap-and-tax program is costing drivers far more in fuel prices. The state Supreme Court just upheld their tax on capital-gains income, so you know they’ll eventually try to squeeze even more money out of people with that new tax. And there is a bill still alive that would make the ‘death tax’ more expensive for some. But all of that is not enough for them. Now, the Democrats want to pass an 11th-hour bill that would triple the growth rate of both state and local property taxes. Many people around our state are asking for tax relief and this is the Democrats’ response?! Unbelievable. Taxpayers have had enough!”

Schoesler, who serves the 9th Legislative District, is a longtime member of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, which deals with budget and tax issues.

East Washingtonian affordable update

Housing is increasingly unaffordable in Washington state. Parents and grandparents are wondering if the younger generations will be able to stay here, or will the cost of living drive them away.

What is driving these costs and is there a way government could act to reduce them?

WPC's Center for Small Business Director, Mark Harmsworth's newest Policy Brief tackles these issues and addresses ways to help make housing more affordable in Washington state. His study highlights issues that add unnecessary costs to building new housing and provides recommendations for making housing more affordable.
Some of the most important takeaways from the publication include:
• Public policy – state and local laws, permitting, building restrictions and regulations – add on average $144,000 to the cost to construct a new, median priced home
• As much as 24 percent of housing price increases at the county level may be attributed to the Growth Management Act (GMA)
• The GMA slowed progress in increased housing affordability statewide by as much as 5.1 percent
• The Washington State Building Code Council's new rules banning the use of natural gas in residential and commercial new construction are estimated to add an additional $24,070 to the cost of a new home.
• Seattle's fee list for permitting regulations is 60 pages long and includes a $271 charge for a "Vacancy Inspection"
• According to the Building Industry Association of Washington, the state zoning process adds an average of $71,739 to the cost of a home.
• "Green" building standards consistently increase costs while failing to deliver on environmental promises.

--Submitted by David Boze, Communications Director with the Washington Policy Center.

The cost of housing in Washington is significantly higher than in other areas in the United States due to Washington’s complex and expensive housing regulations and zoning requirements, which add on average $144,000 to the cost to construct a new, median-priced home.

Much of the region will see some light snow showers/flurries this AM but this is just the opening act. An approaching cold front will deliver widespread snow once again late today through early Wednesday. Odds are good that the heaviest amounts will occur over the southeast third of Washington into the southern half of the Idaho Panhandle. This could result in a slow commute tomorrow morning, so plan accordingly.
