UPDATED: Community Notice

PADC will be hosting an informational meeting for all of the Po***ck community Monday, July 22, at 7 p.m. at the Community Center lunchroom. The purpose is to provide as much factual information as possible about the decision by DFA to close the Po***ck plant and get info about their future plans, etc. At least one, and maybe two or three, representatives from DFA will be available by either Zoom meeting or phone call to answer questions, etc. Ken Odde has agreed to serve as moderator for the meeting and/or follow up discussion.
Due to the short timeframe involved there will not be any public notice in the newspaper, so please share this info about meeting place, time, etc. on social media so that the word gets out to as many people as possible. The meeting is open to anyone and everyone in the Po***ck and surrounding community.
This is a difficult decision for the community at large, but especially for the 30 plus employees at the plant. Please be respectful of those employees and the difficult time they are going through.
Thanks,
Orland Geigle

URGENT NEWS STATEMENT:

Statement: Po***ck, S.D., Plant
For media inquiries, contact Kim O’Brien at 816-801-6840 or [email protected]

Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) announced on Thursday, July 18, that after a careful analysis of new demand and current supply dynamics and as part of a coordinated, Cooperative-wide milk marketing and balancing optimization project, the decision has been made to close our dairy ingredient facility in Po***ck, S.D.
Unfortunately, as a result, 33 full-time positions will be eliminated, as well as four parttime roles.
The employees at the facility have done an excellent job producing dairy ingredients, and we appreciate all their hard work and dedication. Any decision impacting people’s livelihoods is one not taken lightly, and we will work with employees to help them through this transition.
The raw milk volume currently received at the Po***ck plant will continue to have a home at nearby production facilities, and our customers will continue to be served by our network of ingredients facilities. This was a difficult decision, but we have a responsibility to operate financially sound businesses that bring additional returns to our family farmowners’ investment in the Cooperative.

Owing to the snow last weekend and blocked roads it has been pretty quiet in town. Farmers found it more comfortable toasting their shins near the stove than bucking the snow to town to do their shopping. Warmer weather is predicted and when it thaws, we will have plenty of moisture for a while.
In spite of bad roads, a nice crowd attended the Bingo and card party sponsored by the Catholic Ladies Altar Society at City Hall.

Mound City hosts annual Hobby and Craft Fair

Looking for something to do before taking that Sunday afternoon nap? Head to the Mound City Community Center for the annual Hobby and Craft Fair.
The community-wide effort is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 30, and will feature music, food, homemade items for sale and much more.
“This is definitely a community effort,” said Gloria Huber, one of the event’s organizers. “If we didn’t have so many volunteers, we’d be in trouble!”
Huber added that this is the only major event of the year to raise funds for the upkeep of the community center, with all funds raised going to that cause.
Attracting upward of 400 people each year, entrance to the event is by a freewill donation at the door. As patrons sign in, their names are entered into drawings for numerous prizes.
“All the local businesses are very, very generous in donating to the door prizes,” Huber said.
The group starts planning for the show in early March and involves the whole community of Mound City. There is a group of women that bake for the concession stand, while others go out seeking door prizes for the drawings.
“I have all kinds of help,” Huber said.
Many vendors will be on hand for shopping all afternoon including: Kelly Nieuwsma, Diane Aas, Spring Valley Farms, Pampered Chef, Norway Luther League, James and Elaine Kanable, Joni Eberhart, Awaken The Soul, Bonnie Buechler, Sandra Bauer, Midnight Jewel, Julie Goehring, Watkins, Color Street Nails, Jason Withrow, Landon Weisbeck, Campbell County 4-H, Discovery Toys, Fisher Unique Finds and Matt and Michelle Hirsch, among others.
In addition, there will be a huge rummage sale for those wanting to hunt for treasures, along with a concession stand featuring local baked goods and Rick Quaschnick's famous pork sausage for sale.
The PIC (Pig Improvement Company) Apex Farm near Mound City donates the animals used to make the sausage, which has garnered quite the local following.
“The magic happens when it comes to making the pork sausage that everybody flocks to,” Huber said, adding that Quaschnick told organizers that he will continue making the product as long as they need him to.
If the food, crafts and rummage sale aren’t enough reason to attend the craft fair, there will also be live entertainment throughout the afternoon, including The Thompson Brothers, a West River group that has a big local audience, Huber said. There will also be a variety of local performers on hand.
“There will be everything from soup to nuts … something for everyone to see,” Huber said. “Now, we are just praying for good weather.”
