The South Bend Police Department is aware of several posts on social media, claiming multiple individuals have died in our city this week due to hypothermia.

Those claims are incorrect… and here are the facts:

On Sunday, January 19, our officers responded to the 1000 block of E. Northside Boulevard for a welfare check on a person inside a tent. The individual inside the tent was found to be deceased, and the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office was contacted.

The Coroner’s Office determined that the individual’s death was not a result of hypothermia, but rather the result of a medical event. The Coroner's Office contacted the person's next-of-kin, and out of respect for the family, no additional information will be released on this very personal matter.

Aside from the incident detailed above, the South Bend Police Department has not been contacted about any other recent deaths that occurred outside and/or as a result of the extreme weather.

The City of South Bend provided our department with information about warming centers and the supplemental overnight shelters, which our officers were able to communicate to those who needed assistance. Additionally, officers were able to transport individuals to those shelters.

Great job South Bend Police Department!!

Why is there a picture from an officer's body camera in your newsfeed? Did SBPD post it by mistake? No... it's going to help us tell you a story of our officers and dispatchers coming together for someone in a time of need.

Earlier this morning, Officer Joshua Pennington observed a snow-covered vehicle parked at a local park. The park was closed... so Officer Pennington went over to check on the vehicle.

Inside the car, Officer Pennington found a mother and her two young children, attempting to get some rest. They didn't have anywhere to go for the night and were trying to stay warm in their vehicle.

After exploring some shelter options, Officers Pennington and Alan Wiegand (pictured below) decided to put together their own money to reserve the young family a night at a local motel to help make them more comfortable. As the officers were discussing their plan, St Joseph County 9-1-1 dispatchers Shelli Mathews and Cheyenne Whiting pitched in some of their own money as well. The dispatchers also worked with the motel to bring down the room rate for the evening.

Before heading over to the motel, officers stopped by the SBPD food pantry to provide the children with some extra diapers. Officer Kassandra Duran helped deliver those necessities. Before leaving, officers shared some additional resources to help the family in the coming days.

We commend Officers Pennington, Wiegand and Duran for going the extra mile to help someone in need. And we also recognize dispatchers Mathews and Whiting for assisting us from afar.

The SBPD food pantry is currently running low on newborn and size 5 diapers, as well as wipes. Our pantry runs on donations... so if you have any extras to spare, we would gladly accept your generosity. Donations can be dropped off at our front desk at 701 W. Sample Street in South Bend!

Bitterly cold air has allowed for lots of ice to develop on area lakes over the past several days 🧊 If you are planning to do any ice fishing or ice skating, be sure you know that the thickness of the ice is safe before going out! 4-5" of ice is thick enough to support ice fishing, walking, and skating on ice. The ice needs to be 9-12" thick to support cars and trucks.

The River Park Turkey, aka Bonnie aka BonBon aka peacock, has successfully been captured by local rescue group, Rescue Release Repeat.

Since December 23, 2024, SBPD has received 𝟭𝟯 calls about her tendency to play Frogger and to gaze longingly into business windows up and down Mishawaka Avenue, specifically Franky's Tacos.

Once incorrectly identified as an escaped peacock from the Potawatomi Zoo, Bonnie made a name for herself as River Park's unofficial mascot. Residents frequently commended BonBon for her traffic directing skills, which resulted in an unofficial job offer from SBPD. However, Bonnie did not respond to our request to pick up a high-visibility vest and flashlight to safely perform her traffic detail duties.

We wish Bonnie well in her new life, hopefully away from busy intersections and all the people asking to add her to their Thanksgiving menus.
