Subject: Man Arrested in Connection to Monday's North Adams Fire
Date: November 25, 2025

On Tuesday, November 25th, Darius Hazard (44 years old: 77 Francis Street, North Adams) was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on one charge of arson in connection with the November 24th North Adams fire. The fire led to the death of Venture Hazard (76 years old) and Donald Hazard (83 years old).

The Defendant was also arrested for the murder of Venture Hazard and the murder of Donald Hazard. He will be arraigned on Wednesday morning, November 26th in connection to the murders. The arraignment will take place at Northern Berkshire District Court.

The Defendant was brought into custody Monday afternoon. He confessed that in the early morning hours of Monday, November 24th, he physically assaulted his parents, Venture and Donald Hazard, inside their home (77 Francis Street). Following the physical assault, the Defendant also confessed that he poured gasoline on the first floor of the home and set the house ablaze. The Defendant reported this took place between 3:00am and 4:00am. After allegedly setting the house aflame, the Defendant drove away from the house.

A 911 call was placed by a neighbor at approximately 7:11am reporting a possible structure fire at 77 Francis Street. North Adams Police were the first to arrive on the scene. An officer noted immense heat coming from the residence and attempted to make contact with individuals inside. The North Adams Fire Department arrived shortly after. Firefighters immediately entered the residence to locate the individuals inside the house and began fighting the fire. When firefighters located two individuals inside the residence they were both deceased. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death for both Venture and Donald Hazard was smoke inhalation.

While responding to the scene for the fire, law enforcement learned that a third individual, Darius Hazard, also resided in the house; however, he was not present at the scene and his car was missing. There was a dry spot in the driveway where the Defendant’s car was normally parked indicating that the Defendant was at the house somewhat recently (it had rained the prior evening). A ‘Be on the Look Out’ was issued for the Defendant and his vehicle. The Defendant was scheduled to arrive at work at 10:00am; however, he did not appear. Fellow employees noted this was extremely unusual as the Defendant was always prompt for his shift. At approximately 2:00pm, a State Police Detective observed a vehicle matching that of the Defendant’s traveling south on Route 7, North Adams. The vehicle had pulled into the Wal Mart parking lot, and the license plate number confirmed the vehicle belonged to the Defendant. At that point law enforcement approached the vehicle and brought Darius Hazard into custody without incident.

District Attorney Shugrue stated, “I’d first like to recognize the tremendous courage of the North Adams firefighters as they entered the house without hesitation in hopes of recovering the residents inside. Responding to this type of situation is harrowing and has lasting impacts on first responders. I am thankful for their dedication to this difficult work.”

Additionally, he added, “My thoughts are with the Hazard family and the North Adams community during this extraordinarily challenging time.”

Law enforcement response included the North Adams Police Department, the North Adams Fire Department; Northern Berkshire Emergency Medical Services; the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office; the Department of Fire Services; Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section; and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab.

The Healey-Driscoll Administration is pushing for the Municipal Empowerment Act, a bill designed to allow Massachusetts municipalities to boost local revenue through increased taxes.

Governor Maura Healey’s local tax hike proposal could give cities and towns throughout Massachusetts the authority to raise taxes on residents and small businesses. Many elected officials throughout the state have said they are constrained by Proposition 2.5

Under Governor Maura Healy’s proposed plan, municipalities would be allowed to:

Increase the local meals tax by over 30%, from 0.75% to 1%

Raise the local lodging tax up to 7%

Impose a new surcharge of up to 5% on motor vehicle excise bills, which could triple the motor vehicle excise tax.

Do you support Gov. Healey’s Municipal Empowerment Act proposal as a way to raise more revenue for the community?

The Defendant is charged with Murder. The arraignment was scheduled to take place at approximately 2pm.

(While the Defendant is a minor, Massachusetts General Law states, G.L. C. 119, sec. 74 “[t]he juvenile court shall not have jurisdiction over a person who had at the time of the offense attained the age of fourteen but not yet attained the age of 18 who is charged with committing murder in the first or second degree. Pittsfield, MA- On Sunday, October 26th, at approximately 6:14 p.m., Pittsfield Police responded to the area of 17 Parker Street, Pittsfield for a report of a single motor vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, an officer observed a white Honda HR-V positioned across Franco Terrace near the intersection of Parker Street. Both the steering wheel and side curtain airbags had deployed, and debris was scattered around the vehicle. Initial observations suggest the vehicle had been traveling down Franco Terrace toward the intersection of Franco Terrace and Parker Street, where it ultimately collided with a tree. The hood of the Honda HR-V was bent inward.

An officer approached the vehicle and observed a male occupant in the driver’s seat. No other individuals were present inside the car. The male was unresponsive and showed no signs of breathing. Blood was visible on and around the victim.

The Pittsfield Fire Department arrived on the scene and removed the victim from the vehicle. Upon removal, first responders discovered that the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was transported to Berkshire Medical Center by Action Ambulance, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Pittsfield, MA-On Thursday [11/6] evening, an arrest was made on probable cause in connection with the murder of Brodie Slonski. On [11/7/25 Jaequan Spratling was charged with Murder and Attempted Armed Robbery.

District Attorney Shugrue stated, “I want to first thank the public for their patience while law enforcement worked to identify a suspect/s in Brodie’s murder. While the police successfully arrested a perpetrator within ten days of the crime, I recognize that living with fear in your neighborhood is a harrowing experience. I secondly want to recognize the tireless work of the Pittsfield Police as they have dedicated themselves around the clock to this case. There have been many sleepless nights in pursuit of solving Brodie’s murder. I am thankful to have such committed law enforcement in our county.”

The District Attorney continued, “Brodie was murdered in the closeknit Morningside community. A community filled with families and small, locally owned businesses. The events that took place shook the neighborhood. I have always said that I have no tolerance for violence and guns in our community. Such events in the Berkshires are fortunately rare; however, when they occur, they shatter not only families but also schools and our community at large. My heart is with Brodie’s parents and family. I vow that the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office will do everything in its power to bring those responsible for his murder to justice.”

The bump out at the corner of South St and West Housatonic St in Pittsfield is a design I really don't understand. Pending on the traffic, I have seen dozens of times when a tractor trailer blocks up the road for 3 or 4 light cycles until the traffic can back up and make room for them to turn, then they have to drive over the sidewalk to be able to make the turn. I plan on reaching out to the DPS commissioner, Ricardo Morales to ask him more about this design and if he believes it is effective.
