Metal Mix Demo
Not complete, but I was able to acheive some pretty beefy tones on the amp sim rig. Using a Tube Screamer emulator and some stock Randall heads inside of Slate THU along with secret custom impulse responses... Dm for the details...
But whats left is leveling, last minute adjustments, and to send off for mastering.

Drum Mixing Process--Drum Sim & Live
A little bit of the process I go through when mixing virtual and live drum recordings.
It's not always the same and I'm not following a certain set of rules. But there is a creative process that occurs and general understanding of where to place the drums in the stereo image and where each of their frequencies sit in a specific mix. But I love sharing tricks and sublte adjustments that make your tracks pop.

Mixing Poor Vocal Recordings..
Pulled from the YouTube archives... But I wanted to share with you guys some techniques that may help you achieve a cleaner sounding vocal even when they're done less professionally.
In this case, the vocalist had a budget microphone that was recorded inside of a car. Simple setup, headphone bleed, no acoustic treatment... you name it! But the mix was done never the less.
Hope this helps some of you guys out that are in similar situations! Comment if you've ever had a recording session like this.

I like it when it's blue...
Black Lion Audio BLUEY
If you've seen these before then you probably know a little bit about how they work and the sound they're after... and if you've ever used one then you probably understand how versatile this thing is and how awesome of a unit it really is. It's the reason why I use it on 80% of my main vocals...
Its not just a "1-channel FET Limiting Amplifier with 20 Microsecond Minimum Attack Time"... But the “Bluey” is a modified “Blue Stripe” compressor based off of the “golden” unit owned by Chris Lord-Alge.
Black Lion Audio says "When certain components became unavailable, techs were forced to change the circuit, creating a one of a kind compressor that has been heard on countless hits. To get the exacting detail that Chris Lord-Alge has enjoyed from the original Bluey, we not only used custom CineMag transformers, we actually recreated his console’s insert path and built it right into the Bluey — giving everyone the same console feel! But we didn’t stop there: We also added an active wet/dry mix for easy parallel compression, as well as a stereo link! Bluey was designed with a vintage-inspired PCB layout, 1% resistors, polyester capacitors, and a linear power supply — meaning that Bluey is built to last! And like all Black Lion products, Bluey is hand assembled and tested in the USA."

ANALOG VS DIGITAL
What's the difference and which is better?
Thats the million dollar question...
Simply put, audio recorded is 100% analog to begin with. Once the signal passes through your ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) or audio interface, and into your computer it is converted to a digital signal seen as a waveform in your DAW (digital audio workstation) ex: ProTools, Studio One, Logic Pro X, etc. Played through the output of your DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) aka audio interface, it's then audible in analog format through your speakers/studio monitors.
It didn't use to be this simple, and in fact, music was still being recorded and produced solely analog and converted to tape or vinyl until CD's emerged in the 1980's. By 1995 computer recording had become a thing and ProTools was becoming the Industry Standard for audio recording.
With this emergence of computer music making and evolving technology, we now have a saturated industry of "Hip Hop Producers", "Mix Engineers", and "Recording Artists". Now easier than ever, computers have not only allowed the opportunity for almost anyone to start a music career, but have also made the process more efficient for audio engineers. That's why you can now get away with owning one mic, an interface, computer, and produce an entire rap album. Better yet, start a mixing or producing business not owning a single piece of gear...
But there are pros and cons to using all digital plugins and emulation software. The cons include never learning how signal processors operate, feeling how the sound reacts realtime, or understanding how the circuits combined gel differently in a mix. Diving into the analog world allows you to use digital plugins as a tool to achieve the sound you want rather than playing with buttons or copying what you saw another engineer do.
Pro's to digital are that you can experiment creatively, it's efficient, cheap, and you can recall every setting with the click of a button! Digital isn't bad, its not worse, and it's not always better... but neither is analog. Both are great tools and have helped music to become what it is today.

One of the many joys I get as a music enthusiast is being able to give back and share/teach. Along with audio engineering I've also had the opportunity to teach drum and percussion lessons at 12th Octave in Greensburg, PA for the past few years.
Drums and guitar playing from a young age is what initially got me into song writing, and more importantly recording... which ultimately led me to a music technology degree and a passion for mixing and mastering.
Not only does teaching keep me fresh, but it's fulfilling to see the progress in the students that come in and out of the doors. And it allows me to think back to where my passion of music first began and where it has led me today.
