In November, McKnight’s 5th grade GOAL class submitted an essay advocating for the use of a national popular vote in place of the Electoral College in presidential elections. The essay contest, called the Citizenship Challenge, was offered through the Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement. Their essay qualified McKnight for the finals, which were held Wednesday at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The 4th and 5th grade GOAL classes traveled to Philadelphia to participate.

In all, more than 200 schools across Pennsylvania submitted essays in the challenge. Thanks to the 5th grade essay and their performance Wednesday in a skit they wrote, McKnight took home the 1st place prize in the state. The victory also earned McKnight a $1,000 prize! Congrats, MCK!

Our third-grade GATE students—Eloise Coudriet, Tristan Railing, Isaac Sleasman, and Maclan Ulanowicz—are headed to the Pennsylvania Invention Convention in Hershey on February 12th! 🏆

Their invention, "The Foodie," tracks food expiration dates to reduce waste and prevent foodborne illness. Out of nearly 500 entries, only 50 were selected, making this achievement even more remarkable!

We’re so proud of their creativity and can’t wait to see them represent Avonworth School District! 🌟

Six students from North Allegheny were part of a robotics team that earned first-place honors at the FIRST LEGO League's Western Pennsylvania Championships. The team, named Band of Steel, includes NA students Noah Wang (6th grade—IMS), Thanura Saravanan (6th grade—IMS), Oliver Hagerty (7th grade—IMS), Luke Challinor (8th grade—IMS), Ethan Murick (8th grade—IMS), and Nathan Bauer (8th grade—CMS). Band of Steel captured first place out of 61 teams at the event.

The FIRST LEGO League is an international STEM program that focuses on robotics, coding, research building, and core values. The FFL Western Pennsylvania Championships took place on December 7 at Aliquippa High School. Participants programmed robots to tackle various challenges, showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills.

The competition also included an innovation project, and this year's theme was titled "Submerged." Band of Steel concentrated its project on educating children about ocean conservation. Through a video presentation, the students have already reached over 3,000 people worldwide with their project. In addition to their global outreach, Band of Steel members are actively involved in their local community. They have conducted multiple coding classes at the local YMCA and for Girl Scout Troops in the area.

Following their first-place finish at the FLL Western Pennsylvania Championships, Band of Steel will now prepare for the state finals on February 15. A top-two finish at the state competition will qualify Band of Steel for the World Championships in April in Houston, Texas.

Band of Steel is comprised of 10 students from five school districts, including North Allegheny, Fox Chapel, Seneca Valley, Sewickley Academy and Wi******er Thurston.
