On July 18, six students marched into the office of Chatham University President Rhonda Phillips to deliver her a list of demands. This group is part of Chatham Students United (CSU), which formed in early July by students living at Orchard Hall following the sudden announcement of its closure. Chatham University announced on July 1 that Orchard Hall, the only residential building at Eden Hall, will close for the 2024-25 academic year due to ongoing university-wide reorganization efforts. Located about 45 minutes from the Shadyside campus, this sudden closure significantly impacts students and the Eden Hall community. We are honored to share that the Communiqué has been recognized as the Student Organization of the Year, alongside our advisor, Sara Bauknecht, receiving the Student Organization Advisor of the Year award! Additionally, we applaud our staff members Riley () for earning the Outstanding Student Award for Communications and Sonny () for earning the Mihail Stolarevsky Award. We’re incredibly proud to celebrate the dedication and talent of our staff, and we sincerely appreciate everyone in the Chatham community who has supported our work.

President Rhonda Phillips joined the Chatham University Women’s Hockey Team for their game against the Lebanon Valley Dutchwomen on Jan. 26 at the Hunt Armory Ice Arena. The women’s basketball team has been making history each game since its trip to Puerto Rico for a tournament over winter break. Not only did the team beat a nationally ranked team for the first time in program history, but each win collected increased their program setting win streak. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. After 14 games, doubled the previous record set in 2021-22, the women’s basketball team finally lost a game. YikYak, the anonymous social media app that shut down in 2017 after being banned by some schools amid criticism for cyberbullying, has steadily made its presence known at Chatham University since it reemerged under new ownership in 2021. Chatham students can log in with their student emails and get access to the Chatham YikYak feed where users anonymously discuss and gossip about college life and beyond. Chatham University announced a change in the student mailing address on the Shadyside campus on Jan. 10. Following this change, some mail has successfully arrived on campus, but several packages have been sent to the wrong location, about 20 minutes north of the Chatham mailroom. Taylor Swift is one of the biggest names in the media these days. Having just been named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, Swift doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. In response to Swift’s exponential increase in popularity over the past year, students at Chatham University have formed a club dedicated to the artist, appropriately named Chatham (Taylor’s Version). Chatham University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have both prospered during the 2023 season. With the women’s team holding a 7-2 overall record and a 6-1 record in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), the men’s team is following their lead, with a 6-3 record overall and is 4-2 in PAC play. Chatham University's campus is equipped with a nationally recognized emergency system consisting of blue lights that guide students to white call boxes linked directly to the police. This emergency system got a boost with the addition of QR codes, which provide another way for Chatham students to contact Public Safety. For the first time in school history, Chatham University hosted a PAC championship game as the women’s volleyball team played Bethany College on Nov. 11. The women’s volleyball team also became the first team in Chatham history to be the top seed for the PAC playoffs. The Communiqué’s video editor, Riley Hurst Brubaker, sat down on camera with Chatham University President Dr. David Finegold to discuss his time at Chatham, what he learned as a first-time university president and his career goals beyond Chatham, ahead of his farewell address. Dr. Finegold will give his farewell address to the Chatham community on Wednesday, April 12 at 2 p.m. in the Mellon Board Room. Dr. Finegold announced his departure from Chatham University in September of 2022, allowing the University to start its search for a new president, who will be announced in the summer of 2023.
