Since I seldom get on Facebook and am unfamiliar with its protocol, I don’t know if others are aware that a significant tree has too quietly fallen in our village. Ralph Proctor, Ph.D. passed on to the Elders February 2nd and his Memorial services will be held March 15, 4-5:30 pm at the CCAC Allegheny Campus Foerster Center. The event is open to the public

I believe it important to do my part as a member of the village and someone who respected “Doc Proc” personally and professionally, to encourage others to learn about him from his biography, show support for him at his Memorial, be inspired by his legacy which was devoted to researching, educating, and exhibiting the culture of Africans and Africans in America, and to use his commitment as inspiration for our adding to the Continuum.

A Quiet Soldier tells the story of Wendell Freeland. Tuskegee Airman. Civil Rights attorney. Powerful advocate for the poor and disenfranchised. Wendell Freeland devoted seventy years to fighting injustice wherever he found it, from the period of Jim Crow to that of Barack Obama. He blazed a trail for racial equality by working largely behind the scenes in America’s courtrooms, boardrooms, and political backrooms.

On October 12, 1995 Jonny Gammage, a 31-year-old African-American businessman, church-goer and volunteer, was pulled over by five white police officers while driving a Jaguar owned by his cousin, Pittsburgh Steeler Ray Seals. During the ensuing struggle Gammage was asphyxiated. There was shock and revulsion in the community, and thousands, both black and white, took to the streets in protest.

Narrated by Danny Glover, “Enough is ENOUGH!” examines the criminal justice system and the procedural relationships among the law enforcement officers, the Coroner’s office, the District Attorneys, and the courts
