I am on a mission to ensure that every New Mexico student can read at their grade level. This week, I’m meeting with experts at Pittsburg State University to make sure we are using every tool to help us get there.

The Center for READing at the university uses a "no failure" approach to learning and is on the cutting edge of developing techniques and research aimed at improving reading skills.

I’m excited to learn more about this nationally recognized program and how we might use it in New Mexico.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR!

Dr. David P. Hurford is a research scientist who has studied dyslexia for the past three decades. From this work, he established the Center for the Assessment and Remediation of Reading Difficulties (CARRD), a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals with dyslexia to become competent readers.

Dr. Hurford's mission involves the prevention and remediation of reading disabilities, searching for strategies that will lead to the improvement of remedial processes, and providing educators and parents with intervention techniques regarding reading and learning disabilities.
