A tropical wave with associated moisture moves into the Gulf this weekend/early next week. Models aren't sounding alarms on it, but it could bring better chances for rain next week along the Gulf Coast. With that being said. It's late August. We'll watch it, but right now thinking some get rain...not a bad thing. It's been a dry month!

Hurricane Katrina Anniversary Spurs Hard Push For AM Radio Act

Almost nineteen years to the day that Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast, Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré, who commanded Joint Task Force Katrina, has led Louisiana officials and first responders in calling on Congress to pass the AM for Every Vehicle Act.

As the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season approaches, this year has already seen five tropical storms, with three escalating into hurricanes, including Hurricane Beryl, a record-breaking Category 5 hurricane – the earliest to form in the season. NOAA predicts an above-average hurricane season, expecting 17-24 named storms, with 8-13 potentially becoming hurricanes.

The AM For Every Vehicle Act would mandate that AM radio – as a safety feature – be included for free in the dashboard of every car made or sold in the US.

Hey everyone George here with your forecast for the New Orleans metro areas

Pleasant weather for August will continue for another 24-48 hrs before moisture starts to slowly increase. This will allow rain to return by Friday but that along with an increase in cloud cover should also keep the afternoon highs from getting out of control.

Slightly drier air will keep the heat more tolerable through Thursday, but moisture will return to the area late-week into the weekend. This will result in higher heat index values and also hit-or-miss afternoon showers and storms

Tonight

Mostly clear, with a low around 78. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Thursday

Sunny, with a high near 93. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph in the morning.

Thursday Night

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly clear, with a low around 78. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Friday

A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Sunny, with a high near 91. East wind 5 to 10 mph.

Friday Night

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly clear, with a low around 78. East wind 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Sunny, with a high near 91. Northeast wind 5 to 15 mph.

Saturday Night

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1am. Mostly clear, with a low around 78. East wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday

A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. East wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday Night

Hello everyone George here with the forecast for the New Orleans metro areas.

8/20/24: Hey, look at those heat indices! Definitely not as miserable as it has been thanks to slightly drier air working into the region... but it's still hot out. We'll take what we can get!

How long will this last???...ehhhh not long. Moisture steadily returns later this week into the weekend, cranking heat indices up some more along with an increase in afternoon hit-or-miss shower/storms.

Slightly drier air that has filtered into the region has helped keep heat indices down some, but won't last long as moisture is soon to return back to the area late-week into the weekend, building heat indices back into the mid 100's with an increase in mainly afternoon hit-or-miss showers and storms.

Tonight

Mostly clear, with a low around 77. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Wednesday

Sunny, with a high near 93. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Wednesday Night

Mostly clear, with a low around 78. East wind around 5 mph becoming northeast after midnight.

Thursday

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Sunny, with a high near 94. Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Thursday Night

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly clear, with a low around 78. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Friday

A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 10am. Sunny, with a high near 91. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Friday Night

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly clear, with a low around 79. East wind 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday

A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Sunny, with a high near 91. East wind 5 to 10 mph.

From NOAA NWS Weather Prediction Center Dangerous heat continues for the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast this weekend, with temperatures in the upper 90's and triple digits expected. ⚠️Heads up! An excessive heat warning has been issued for our whole area for tomorrow! Heat index values up to 120 degrees are expected.

🌡️Make sure yourself and others stay safe during the extreme heat tomorrow!

🌡️🔥 We have not seen the level of extremely hot temperatures we saw in 2023 this summer, but it has been consistently hotter and more humid than normal. This has lead to many days with high heat indices and uncomfortable, sweaty nights.

📈 Because there were several days with excessive heat warnings issued areawide in 2023 (meaning no heat advisories were issued), today marks the most heat advisories (36) issued for our area in a given year.

🥵 While tomorrow looks to be a miserably hot day, the humidity does decrease during the work week which will make it more of a "dry" heat.

On this day on August 16th, 1992:

One of the most destructive United States hurricanes on record started modestly as a tropical wave that emerged from the west coast of Africa on August 14. The wave spawned a tropical depression on August 16, which became Tropical Storm Andrew the next day. Here is some more information about Hurricane Andrew... The highest wind speed was 174mpr also In all...

Hurricane Andrew was the strongest and most devastating hurricane on record to hit southern Florida. It struck South Miami-Dade County (then known as Dade County) during the pre-dawn hours on Monday, August 24th, 1992. It caused an estimated $26 billion damage in the United States making it at the time the most expensive natural disaster in United States history, not to be surpassed until Hurricane Katrina 13 years later. Almost all of the damage cost was from southern Dade County, where the number of homes destroyed was approximately 49,000, with an additional estimated 108,000 damaged. In Homestead, the hardest hit community, more than 99% (1167 of 1176) of all mobile homes were completely destroyed. 15 direct deaths and 28 indirect deaths were attributed to Andrew in mainland South Florida, all but 3 of these occurring in Dade County.

Andrew was a Category 5 at landfall, with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph and a minimum central pressure of 922 millibars. It it one of only four hurricanes to make landfall in the United States as a Category 5 since 1900 (the others being the 1935 Florida Keys Labor Day storm, Hurricane Camille in 1969, and Hurricane Michael in 2018).

Date: August 16, 1992 – August 28, 1992
Damage: $27.3 billion (1992 USD)
