A federal judge approved a landmark class action settlement between Aetna and same-s*x couples in New York who alleged the insurance behemoth had discriminated against them and other LGBTQ customers seeking fertility treatment.

Emma Goidel and her spouse, Ilana Caplan, filed a lawsuit against Aetna in 2021 after the health insurer denied several of their requests for covering their fertility treatments. The couple, who were represented by the National Women’s Law Center, said they spent more than $50,000 out of pocket to conceive their second child.

Aetna, a subsidiary of CVS Health Corp., reached a deal with the couples in October to begin covering artificial insemination for all of its customers nationally and work toward providing equal access for costly in-vitro fertilization procedures.

The judge’s sign-off on the settlement marks the first time LGBTQ couples who were previously denied fertility coverage in the U.S. can apply to be reimbursed.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, signed a law Monday prohibiting public schools and libraries from banning books and protecting librarians who obey state law.

Murphy’s signing of the Freedom to Read Act comes amid an ongoing push by conservative lawmakers and activists across the country to challenge books they consider inappropriate for minors, particularly those about LGBTQ issues and race. Lawmakers in at least 13 states this year have introduced legislation to disrupt library services or limit their materials, according to an NBC News tally.

New Jersey is the third state to sign a law prohibiting the banning of books at public schools and libraries, following Illinois and Minnesota.

Ben Nelson and Adam Weinberger are one of many gay couples in recent weeks who are rushing to get married, start fertility treatments and take other measures out of fear that some of their rights might be rescinded during a second Trump administration.

Same-s*x marriage has been legal in the United States since the Supreme Court’s 2015 landmark ruling, Obergefell v. Hodges. But some gay couples say they fear that after it overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, unraveling half a century of legal precedent, the Supreme Court will rescind their right to marry next.

In 2014, after 55 years of love and devotion in their Greenwich Village brownstone, Tom Doyle faced every gay person's nightmare: When his partner Bill passed away, Bill's nieces and nephews claimed ownership of their shared home.
Despite living there for over half a century, despite being named in Bill's will, Tom faced eviction at age 85 - simply because they hadn't been able to legally marry in time.
Bill's family tried to dismiss their relationship as just "roommates," erasing decades of love. After an intense legal battle that drew national attention, Tom finally won the right to stay in the home where he and Bill had built their life together.
Stories like these aren't ancient history - they're why our fight for dignity and recognition matters 💪🌈

The Supreme Court will consider a law restricting transition-related health care for minors for the first time Wednesday, and legal experts say the court’s decision could affect access to transition-related care nationwide for both minors and adults for decades to come.

The key legal question the court will consider is whether a Tennessee law that bars puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgery for trans minors discriminates on the basis of s*x.

Trans youths, their families and providers of transition-related care have told NBC News that state restrictions on such care have created a confusing patchwork of laws across the country that has led many families to have to travel out of their home states for care.

As a result, legal experts say, the court’s decision could determine what access to such care looks like for years to come not only for minors but also for adults because of some of President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed policies.
