To kick off our new year, we wanted to highlight the man who started it all – our CEO Jim Manley!

Q: What key lessons from the early photojournalism days have you carried with you into your role as CEO of Manley Creative?

A: A few things.

1-Be overprepared. What we do is supposed to be fun, for the most part. I've found that when the team is overprepared, things go more smoothly and the day is much more enjoyable...not just for us but for our valued clients as well.

2-Absorb the moment. I've been so lucky to be in a profession where I get to tell the stories of incredible people and awesome companies. I never take that for granted and I make it a point to embrace and remember every moment.

3-Listen and learn. I talk...a lot. But, I learned a long time ago that listening to others, understanding them, and learning from them is the most important part of a conversation.

4-It takes a team.

Q: How do you approach building and nurturing a team of creative professionals at Manley Creative, and what do you believe sets your team apart in the industry?

A: Like any successful business or sports team, everyone needs to be rowing in the same direction. Additionally, the team will continuously improve when they are open to new ideas, swallow their egos, consistently deliver quality, and take time to recharge.

I also strongly believe getting together as a team to develop and implement a set of core values and a core purpose is essential in nurturing a team of professionals. Everyone in our company knows and lives our 4 core values (at work and at home): Wear Everyone's Shoes, Ready for The Curve, Be Present, and Make Everything Better. And our core purpose: Genuinely caring about our clients, our clients, and our communities.

Q: We've talked about your professional journey, but I'm curious about your interests outside of work. Are there any hobbies or activities that you're particularly passionate about, and how do they bring balance to your role as CEO?

A: When I'm not at work, I do many things that help bring balance to my work role.

1-I play music with my family and/or my band. I've been playing piano, guitar, and singing since I was 5 years old. I have a saying I like to repeat from time to time: Where words fail, music speaks

2-Traveling with my family.

3-Exercise.

4-Going to concerts with my wife.

5-Doing things with the various non-profits I'm involved with. I'm currently the chairman of The Phoenix Theatre Company and we're smack dab in the middle of a $30M expansion.

6-Doing NYT crosswords.

7-Watching sports with my friends or just hanging out and chatting about life.

8-Listening to books about business and life. The Anatomy of Peace is my favorite book and I also enjoy a lot of books by Jim Collins.

We're always looking for ways to raise the bar, and that starts with our COO, Rich Beissel. With a long road of creative excellence, Rich shares a bit about his experience to date and approach to leading the team. Get to know Rich!

Q: Let's rewind a bit. Can you take us back to the early days of your career? What initially drew you to the creative field?

A: I got into the creative field by chance. At the time, I was a sophomore without a major and decided to follow a friend of mine down to the student station at ASU on the way to lunch one day. While down there, I found out that I was able to use cool video editing and camera equipment whenever I wanted. That seemed a lot more appealing to me than a career in accounting or sales. Thus a career was born.

Q: What’s your approach to maintaining high standards of quality throughout the creative process, from conceptualization to final delivery?

A: My approach is to make sure I hit two things.

Make sure whatever myself or my team puts out reflects what our client was requesting. If we are not fulfilling the clients needs, then the project is a failure.
I never want to put out just good enough. The goal for every project is to put out the best product possible with the given scope of the project. If you aren't always giving your client or yourself the best effort possible, then it's not good enough.

Q: If you could switch roles with anyone on the Manley Creative team for a day, who would it be and why? What do you think you'd enjoy most about stepping into their shoes for a day?

A: If I could switch roles with anyone at Manley Creative it would be our lead editor Zack Bender. I'm constantly in awe of his talent in every facet of editing, and I'd love to have a day that combines his skills, and my joy for everything creative.

When it comes to digital marketing, Hillary Applegate is our go-to expert. From aerospace to guacamole, there aren't too many industries she hasn't worked in. We're always learning from her and had to ask a few questions to share with you all about her journey thus far.

Q: In the fast-paced world of digital marketing, staying inspired is crucial. How do you keep your creativity flowing and stay up to date with industry trends that can inform your strategies?

A: By surrounding myself with talented people, of course! Independent research is helpful, but working with other digital practitioners helps me pause to look at things differently – whether it’s rethinking how we build out an omnichannel campaign or where we show up on social media.

Q: What's a pivotal moment or learning experience from your past that significantly shaped your path and perspective in marketing?

A: My ideas that have flopped have paved the way for some of the most breakthrough moments in my marketing career. Learning to be okay with trial and error, especially in an ever-changing field, has allowed me to be quicker to adapt and offer better solutions for our clients compared to the standard cookie-cutter marketing.

Q: Content marketing plays a significant role in establishing thought leadership and building trust. How do you develop and implement content strategies that position our B2B clients as reliable sources of information within their industries?

A: People build trust in people. I think that one of the biggest B2B misconceptions is that you must be corporate… or in other words, stale. At the end of the day, humans are making these buying decisions. Content marketing allows for the real people behind these companies to shine in their own unique ways. When we partner with clients to break them out of that outdated mentality of B2B marketing, it paves the way for more meaningful and valuable information for everyone.

What do you get when you combine operational excellence with creative skillsets galore? Michael Kneller. Not only is our Systems Director the one who keeps our technology running and efficient for clients - Michael is also a talented creator, writing and directing our latest short film "The Seer". Get to know Michael below!

As someone who wears multiple hats and manages various aspects of the agency, including IT systems and office management, how do you effectively stay organized and prioritize multiple requests to ensure each task receives the attention it deserves?

- Keeping organized while managing such a variety of systems and user needs can be challenging, not unlike playing "keep-it-up" with a hundred balloons. Over a cactus field. And the balloons have people in them, and expensive computers.

I find it extremely important to have a strict queuing system for requests, tasks, and overarching projects. Creating several easy pathways for users to communicate their support needs helps me organize, prioritize and focus on the most pertinent issues at hand.

Looking ahead, what technological trends do you see shaping the future of Manley Creative, and how do you plan to prepare the team for those changes?

- I think it’s already become clear to most people that most businesses, Manley included, are going to be heavily influenced by this confluence of emerging technologies that are getting tons of buzz right now. Artificial intelligence will no doubt reshape content creation and predictive analytics, while augmented and virtual reality will revolutionize storytelling and experiential marketing. Any presentation you'll see on the emergence of these technologies invariably hit three bullet points: 1. They're amazing. 2. They're scary. And 3. Get ready.

To ensure we’re prepared, we're investing in continuous training and research in technical innovations, fostering a culture of adaptability and innovation within our business, and focusing on a deep understanding of data ethics and responsible AI to ensure our campaigns are not just technologically advanced, but also socially responsible, with a people-before-profits mentality.
