...and we keep the beat going. We always enjoy filming the dress rehearsal of BlakTinx Dance Fest so we can get closer to the action with one camera, and document the show with a wide shot on the second camera, without worry about interrupting the show for the audience. Two camera shoots help us make exciting promo videos like this one (edited by the talented @bayliemacrae! filmed by Ri Lindegren and Dean Saifullin!)

Ri had a blast documenting this hybrid dance performance/performance art/live event by The Ladies at the Moxy Hotel last year. Ri set up wide shot that kept running to capture the action downstairs/at certain heavily trafficked areas and then ran around following the action with a second camera on a gimbal.
Dances With Tech makes it work on budget with a skeleton crew (although we would LOVE to hire multiple videographers to capture the magic).
The Ladies are still running around in 90's mom dancing fashion - check out their work @danceladiesdance by @yesandproductionsaz

Who knew dance floors could be heat sealed so you don't trip over the grip tape? Or that there are so. many. kinds. of dance floors!? As a videographer, half the fun is learning the stories behind the story your client wants to share with the world. We can't claim to be dance floor experts by any means, but we definitely have a new appreciation for the importance of quality flooring thanks to @harlequinfloors.
We had a great time working with ASU dance students and faculty to create this custom promo video this past spring. It was a joy to work with ASU student dancers @jimenafperez (undergrad) and @movesbyjp (grad), faculty @thesholabareexperience and @nicolebradleybrowning, and the media team at @asumusicdancetheatre.
From every step to every spin, we’ve got your moves covered! 🎥✨ Let's create magic for your next project! #DanceFloorDreams #VideographyMagic #BringYourVisionToLife"

What do you want to know about sound and lighting for video and dance filmmaking?
Where do you find hope? How does the transition from grief to hope feel in your body? Tell us your thoughts, and any moments/images that stuck out to you from this dance film!
We had so much fun last Saturday learning about dance filmmaking together and finding ways to connect breath and conscious awareness of being in our bodies to filming practices. There are 2 workshops remaining this Saturday 8/31 and some slots left to jump into this playful & intentional dance filmmaking practice with sound, light, and movement. Join in ASAP www.danceswithtech.com/workshop!
Quick recap:
There were 2 workshops, Dance Film Crash Course and Camera + Movement Scores Play Lab. The attendees were having so much fun creating a dance film together they folded break time into more filming time and we extended the final workshop by 30 minutes to keep moving and exploring embodied filmmaking techniques together.
Attendees made a minimal-edits-needed dance film (that I retroactively titled "where hope is found" based on our group conversation). It was inspired by the art piece in the concrete grid of @cahokiaphx. 7 people worked together to take turns filming and directing their scene from the storyboard on 1 camera phone. I guided participants through ideating possible simple story and character ideas, directed traffic to keep the cameras rolling, and jumped in to offer advice or ideas as needed. Otherwise everyone played with their own ideas and approaches within the collective idea. We had first time dance filmmakers (and first time storyboarders!) as well as some seasoned camera folks and choreographers.
Next, attendees tried on different breathing patterns (coming out of a yoga/pranayama practice) and took time out from busy schedules to connect to their own bodies. From this place of breath and grounding, they moved into exploring how their own bodies could transition from floor to standing, hold and release tension, support durational camera filming, and most importantly, how

LAST CHANCE! Deadline TONIGHT to register for the workshop series happening TOMORROW! We have 4 slots left for tomorrow, and 8 slots for Saturday 8/31. JUMP. ON. IN! danceswithtech.com/workshop
Why, Ri? Why should I take this dance filmmaking workshop series?
Okay first, it's FUN! Dance filmmaking is all about creative expression, trying things out, sharing your voice (or figuring out what your voice is), and learning new skills/expanding old ones. Every workshop you take gives you new points of inspiration and places to play (and it's a form of PLAY! We all need more play in our lives). I love teaching dance filmmaking, and I think (I hope) that passion shines through. This is my first time offering a workshop in the Phoenix community (I've faciliated events in NYC and taught inside of academic spaces like ASU).
Still not convinced? Okay, here is a list:
📸Learn the basics of dance filmmaking: You'll expand your perspectives of how to see movement through a camera lens, explore camera angles and framing, lighting, audio, and other essential techniques for creating dance films.
🤺Explore embodied approaches to filmmaking: You’ll have the time to pay attention to the connection between what’s happening in your body (breathing, muscles, bones, holding patterns) and how you hold and move with the camera, as well as how you connect and move with the camera when dancing in front of it.
🎊Collaborate with other artists: You'll have the opportunity to work with other dancers and filmmakers to create a collaborative piece of art.
đź’«Gain hands-on experience: You'll get the chance to practice and try on your ideas both behind and in front of the camera, which makes planning and thinking through future projects easier
🚀Build your portfolio
🫦Develop your artistic voice
🌅Network with other dance filmmakers

How do we reflect on the process of what we make? How do we celebrate it and share it?
The main goal when you’re making work is just to make it....even if it’s not perfect, even if it’s messy, even if its not the best thing that you’ve ever made.
Part of the fun of making a dance film is being creative, expressing yourself, and telling a story. Then seeing how the audience reacts because sharing it is really important.
