The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides instruction in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Spain, Spanish America, and the Luso-Brazilian world. We also teach specialized courses in Business, Legal, Medical Spanish and Translation Skills. In addition to the robust array of course offerings that allow both majors and non-majors to tailor their learning towards their professional a
nd intellectual goals, students frequently participate in one of our special programs, offering the opportunity to experience the world outside the classroom: these programs include: an intensive immersion program in Spanish and Latin American Studies (LASS); diverse programs abroad, including our Temple Spain Programs; and service learning and internships in areas of business, social service, and education in Philadelphia. Our Graduate Program in Spanish integrates the fields of Literature and Linguistics, providing a solid background in each for M.A. students, the rigorous program develops advanced Spanish-language skills vital to today’s careers and trains students in both the exercise of research and in the pedagogical skills necessary for the pursuit of the Ph.D. students engage in advanced study and research in Spanish Peninsular Literature, Spanish American Literature, and Hispanic Linguistics, while obtaining the skills necessary for careers in academia. Our department faculty remains very active in research and the department is a vibrant intellectual community; one, which participates in conferences, lecture series and receives grants.

All applicants for admission are automatically considered for fellowships or teaching assistantships that include full tuition remission, medical coverage, and a stipend of $26,000-$30,000 per year for at least five years, depending on qualifications.

“With my time in Oviedo this summer, I was immersed into a culture that took my breath away and taught me so much in only 1 month. I experienced so much stuff with Jaime, Norma, and our group, and forged so many friendships and memories alongside them. This program is such a unique experience and has such a home-y and inviting atmosphere with the people you go with, the family you stay with, and the Professors that teach you. I was able to walk into Oviedo knowing very little about speaking Spanish and left with an in-depth comprehension of not only the language, but culture as a whole. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to be challenged academically, be fully immersed into a culture, and forge connections that hold a special place in their heart.”

José Pablo Barragán, Premio Internacional de Poesía José Hierro 2023 👏🏼👏🏼 “Con estos versos se abre el poemario titulado “Tarea de español”, obra con la que José Pablo Barragán (Valladolid, 1981) acaba de alzarse con el ###IV Premio Internacional de Poesía José Hierro. El jurado* ha destacado este poemario entre las 674 obras originales presentadas a esta edición; versos que son “una visión crítica de las últimas dos décadas de la realidad económica y social española, desde una mirada crítica y a la vez tierna”, que abordan temas como la migración, el pueblo o la herencia familiar, que conectarán con muchos lectores y lectoras. Dotado con 9.000€ y la publicación del libro en de la Colección Literaria Universidad Popular, de perfil internacional y con la colaboración de RTVE por segundo año, hoy por hoy, el “José Hierro” está considerado entre los premios poéticos en lengua castellana más prestigiosos. Este año con una una novedad que promete catapultarlo: la obra será distribuida por la editorial Ya lo dijo Casimiro Parker. Y este año también, por primera vez, con una ausencia: la de Ángel García López, nombrado Miembro Honorario del Jurado. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees with specializations in Spanish American Literature, Peninsular Spanish Literature and Hispanic Linguistics. Our graduates have experienced successful placement. The Department has an active and multinational group of faculty and graduate students with literary, linguistic and cultural interests in several fields. Program Goals The graduate program in Spanish integrates the study of the three fundamental fields of Hispanic studies: Peninsular Spanish literature, Spanish American literature and Hispanic linguistics. The Master of Arts provides a solid program developing advanced Spanish language skills for diverse careers (in secondary education, business, health and government services and interpretation and translation). Students also receive training in the pedagogical and research skills necessary for the pursuit of a PhD. The Doctor of Philosophy, meanwhile, provides opportunities for advanced study and research in selected fields in Hispanic studies. Additionally, the program trains scholars/teachers for careers principally at institutions of higher learning. The MA and PhD degrees may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. QUESTIONS?
