Extra! Extra! Spring 2025 Online Class 🗞️ 🗣️

The goal of Spanish 5142/4142, The Latin American Short Story, is to provide an overview of the most relevant tendencies which are integral to the development of this literary genre in Latin America spanning the 1900s to the first decade of the 21st century. The course will pay attention to canonical authors who have been influential not only within the context of Latin American writing, but internationally as well. We will read short stories by José María Arguedas, Roberto Bolaño, María Luisa Bombal, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Gabriel García Márquez, Cristina Peri Rossi, Horacio Quiroga, Juan Rulfo, and many others. The course is intended to develop students’ analytical abilities and close reading skills through the interpretation of Spanish language texts. By the end of the course, all students should improve their oral and written skills through class participation, written and oral presentations, and in-class discussions.

Book summary:
This book culminates a research that examines the theatrical, social, political and economic environment of Portugal in the 20th century, focusing on the impact of censorship on the performing arts. It addresses the prohibitions, vetoes and laws imposed by censors during the Estado Novo regime.

The percentage data presented were elaborated from the consultation of censorship reports of the period analyzed, a fact that has allowed corroborating the degree of repression experienced in the last years of the Estado Novo.

Los autores prohibidos also provides a clear view of the theatrical works that never reached the stage, and therefore never became known to the public. Likewise, this publication has a list of the plays approved after April 25, together with the activity of the theaters, requested authors, dramatic texts and artistic practices of the theater companies (professional and amateur) of this period. In this way, it has been intended to decentralize the focus on the great Lisbon, opening new lines of research to the scientific community.
