West Philly Writers League

West Philly Writers League For published & unpublished writers in West Philadelphia: information, support, sharing, tips to improve writing, resources, and keeping West Philly weird.

Our organization's primary purpose is to provide an online forum for writing information, books, posts about local writing events and workshops, general support and sharing among writers, answers to questions about writing, helping members improve their skills and eventually market their writing if they desire to do that, and to promote the interests of our writers and the small writing community

in West Philadelphia. The League is composed of published and unpublished writers, and people just interested in writing and literature. Eventually, we would like to have regular public mixers and meetings to discuss books and writing, somewhere in West Philly. The local offshoot writing group, Daughters of Doom, is a mixed genre women only closed group, by invitation only. They meet once a month.

This is a great read. But also read the comments in the original post, because the thread is very illuminating. Relevant mainly to writing, but to art as well, and how selling what you do and making a living has changed.

I liked some of the commenters who pointed out that when people were reading print magazines and books, artificial intelligence wasn’t creeping and tracking their data and no one had to worry about hackers. There are upsides and downsides to the digital publishing game these days.

“Prozac Nation” seemed to herald a boundless future for young creatives. It was actually the beginning of the end.

I hear books are making a strong comeback. There’s something about holding one in your hands, feeling the weight of it, flipping the pages, smelling the paper and ink, reading words you can touch. And there’s the quietude of a library that is comforting...

Remember, it’s better DONE than perfect. There’s plenty of time to edit, later.

For those writers lamenting how long it takes to finish writing a book: Walden took nine years. It was published 165 years ago today. So, maybe it isn't about how long it takes to write it; maybe it's about how long it lives after you've gone...

My favorite kind of these is when people with tons of groceries lets someone with a few things cut ahead of them in the checkout line :)
