A look ahead

The end of 2024 is just three weeks away and, at this time of year, many of us are reflecting back on the year departing, and looking forward to the year arriving.

As some of you know, 2024 hasn’t been an easy year for me personally β€” I’ll be glad to see the back of it β€” but I think 2025 promises to be an interesting year for volunteering.

I think that Volunteer-Involving Organisations and Volunteer Engagement Professionals will continue to face the challenges and seize the opportunities, of casual volunteering becoming the norm for how people give time.

I hope that we’ll see more in-person gatherings for our field, recapturing the networking potential of the pre-Covid ways of working.

I feel that, with the parlous state of world affairs, there is a real moment for volunteers to shine, to light the way to a better future for us all. The energy and enthusiasm is waiting to be unlocked and, as Volunteer Engagement Professionals, we get to turn the key.

How exciting is that?

Please note: this is the last Two-Hundred Word Tuesday post from me for 2024. The next one will be out on the 7th January 2025.

Thanks for sharing Allison Russell, Ph.D. in Texas! We love hearing why our team of authors, volunteers and supporters continue to "engage" with the journal. Without their expertise, we couldn't bring you discussion and insights from around the world.

Allison serves as our Research To Practice editor:

"I write for Engage because I believe that connecting research to practice is critical for not only advancing the field of volunteer engagement leadership but also ensuring that researchers are asking the right questions.

As an academic, it is my role to facilitate conversation, connection, and collaboration that fosters mutual learning, and I believe that writing for the Engage Research to Practice section allows me to further that goal both professionally and personally."

Our Story

Engage is written for volunteer engagement leaders around the world who want to be informed and challenged about volunteering trends and issues. It is published by the Susan J. Ellis Foundation. When the journal began in 2000, we were the first and only electronic publication for the field, combining the best characteristics of a printed professional journal with the explosive potential of Internet technology. Today, we strive to provide thought-provoking information on all aspects of volunteer involvement; tap into an international base of knowledge and experience; and maximize interactions among readers and authors.
