The bull mastiff first seen in a cage at the pet shop where Adrian works in "Rocky" (1976) was really Sylvester Stallone's dog. The dog was 6 weeks old when Stallone got him in 1969, and was named after Dick Butkus. Butkus was Stallone's loyal companion through the lean times, while Stallone was writing "Rocky." At one point Stallone sold Butkus for $40 in desperation for food. Stallone sold his story, and longing to be reunited with his beloved friend, he bought Butkus back for a reported $15,000. Butkus's love and excitement for his master is real when we see Adrian give Butkus to Rocky as a Christmas gift. And he couldn't be happier than running by Rocky's side during training. Butkus also appeared in "Rocky ll." At his full weight Butkus weighed 140 lbs. Stallone promised Butkus that if they ever hit the big time that Butkus would be treated like a king. And that is just what Stallone did. Stallone said that Butkus was his best friend, and confidant. And the one living being that accepted him for who he is...Butkus crossed the rainbow bridge in 1981.
