Temporary Skeletal Anchorage for camouflaging Class III Malocclusions Martin Salvador, Aznar Arraiz

Martin and Aznar explores the use of miniscrews for class 3 treatment, including the use of retromolar miniscrews, miniplates with the use of Class III elastics and osseointegrated implants. with 4 clinical cases.

“In this article, different methods of using skeletal anchorage for class III compensation “camouflage” have been presented, such as: retromolar miniscrews for distalization of the lower arch, the use of miniplates together with class III elastics for orthopedic or dentoalveolar advancement of the upper arch and the use of osseointegrated implants for tooth movements in all 3 planes of space.”

Treatment strategies for vertical maxillary excess: Cases with and without anterior open bite Cheol Ho Paik

Cheol Ho Paik explores the use of miniscrews for posterior intrusion of maxillary and mandibular arches, as well as the use of myofunctional therapy through 7 clinical cases.

“This simplified process involves placing a single miniscrew in the midpalatal area for the maxillary arch and two miniscrews in the mandibular buccal areas. The system facilitates the differentially regulated intrusion of the anterior and posterior dentition.”

A three-dimensional perspective on Brodie Bite's diagnosis, planning, treatment alternatives, and complications. Carol Weinstein

Carol Weinstein explores the presentation and treatment of the Brodie Bite, with a detailed discussion of the mechanics and complications of managing the complex malocclusion.

“Efficient treatment strategies need to be individualized depending on vertical and transverse components. Ideally, the current standard of care is using skeletal anchorage with a disocclusion strategy, stabilizing the teeth not involved in the Brodie Bite.”

Blast 💥 from the Past

The paper “A Historical Overview of the Development of the Acid-Etch Bonding System in Orthodontics” by P. Emile Rossouw provides a detailed exploration of the advancements that have revolutionized orthodontic bonding techniques. The paper begins by tracing the early years, highlighting key ideas and significant developments that laid the foundation for modern bonding methods, including the shift from orthodontic bands to direct bonding with acid-etching of enamel. This was published in Volume 16, Issue 1,March 2010, Pages 2-23.Rossouw delves into the evolution of bonding materials, focusing on critical factors such as adhesion, wetting, contact angles, and the development of stronger bond strengths. The paper examines the impact of bracket mesh pad designs, base sizes, and the use of different etching solutions on bond efficiency, enamel loss, and reduction of contaminants. Special attention is given to challenges such as bracket and bond failures, cytotoxicity, and the risk of enamel damage, including white spot lesions and decalcification. The author also explores the advancements in light-cure bonding, bonding to non-enamel surfaces, and specialized approaches for different ages. The paper concludes by discussing future directions, emphasizing continued innovation in enamel conditioning, oral hygiene, and safe bracket removal techniques. This comprehensive overview is a must-read for orthodontists interested in the historical and scientific evolution of bonding systems that continue to shape clinical practice today. The paper can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.1053/j.sodo.2009.12.

Blast from the past 💥💥💥🚀In the context of congenitally absent or traumatically avulsed teeth in the maxillary anterior region of the dental arch of a preadolescent, the most efficient, enduring, timely, and cost-effective solution is one and the same: the use of natural dentition. In the previous 5 decades, extensive resources have been allocated to the study of autotransplantation procedures, which frequently reflect a high success rate. In addition, improvements in orthodontic positioning and restorations continue to enhance outcomes of dental substitutions. Various studies have reviewed treatment alternatives for individuals experiencing congenitally missing or traumatically lost maxillary anterior teeth; however, reports discussing both substitution and autotrans-plantation as viable treatment options in this region were not previously available. The methodology and necessary considerations pertaining to canine substitution for a maxillary lateral incisor, cuspid substitution for a premolar, lateral substitution for a maxillary central incisor, and autotransplantation of a mandibular premolar for a missing incisor are discussed in this paper by Norris and Caesar… ( Semin Orthod 2013;19:3-12.)

💥 Blast from the Past! Bell and Sonis discuss Space Supervision Strategies 🎊🎊🎊🍾🔝 A decade old paper, is often cited as a great reading resource for residents. Mandibular incisor crowding in the mixed dentition is one of the most common problems presenting to the orthodontist. Asymmetry of alignment, premature loss of primary canine(s),and disruption in arch integrity are all early benchmarks of a tooth size/arch length discrepancy in the transitional dentition that can occur independent of any skeletal discrepancy. Space supervision and guidance of eruption refer to treatment interventions during the early to mid- mixed dentition periods that influence the eruption patterns and positioning of the permanent teeth during the transition.Generally considered applicable to individuals with adequate overall arch dimensions to accommodate a normal complement of permanent teeth with an acceptable esthetic and functioning occlusion, guidance of eruption involves the implementation of directed interventions to optimize the eruption and alignment patterns of the permanent teeth as part of a non-extraction protocol. Volumetric differences in temporomandibular joint components in patients with facial asymmetry: A 3D tomographic segmentation study. Diego Fernando López

Diego explores the use of CBCT in facial asymmetry with a focus on condylar volume as a key diagnostic tool.

“Condylar volumes are higher in almost all facial asymmetry subgroups compared to matched controls. The glenoid cavity volume is larger in facial asymmetry patients, except for the Glenoid Cavity Asymmetry right and Functional Laterognathism left sides. Regarding articular spaces, Hemimandibular Elongation was the only entity with less volume on the contralateral side. The evaluation of structural volume by 3D-CT images helps to diagnose and differentiate facial asymmetry subgroups.”

💥 from the past ! The ability to close extraction spaces preferentially is an essential skill required during orthodontic treatment. The core concept of anchorage control is the delivery of a differential force system to the anchor teeth relative to the active teeth. Unequal moment force systems or differential moment force systems are an excellent means of achieving anchorage control. This paper by Kuhlberg and Priebe from Seminars in Orthodontics in 2001 describes the fundamental concepts and clinical methods of anchorage control during extraction space closure. (Space Closure and Anchorage Control. Andrew J. Kuhlberg and Derek N. Priebe. Semin Orthod 2001;7:42-49.) https://doi.org/10.1053/sodo.2001.21073.

Orthodontic marketing. The issue of information vs. trust; supporting future patients in their choices when accessing online information. Neil Hillyard

Neil explores for current landscape of information received by patients, what can mis-lead patients and methods of enhance communication with potential patients.

“The orthodontic community shares a common goal: to ensure patients receive the best advice and, therefore, the best care. In this age of unlimited access to information from every possible platform, this goal has become more and more challenging to reach. Strangers hiding behind a social media platform seem to have more credibility than brands or businesses, no matter their standing, and qualifications do not seem to weigh as much in the balance as they used to.”
