Starting to sound like a broken record with this rain!!
Flood watch extended again until 4pm Friday.
We just can’t get rid of this coastal trough of low pressure responsible for this messy weather. Expect several more rounds of rainfall. Some could be heavy at times, and, with thoroughly saturated soils, the risk for flash flooding is elevated. Never drive into flood waters.

You guys in SE Texas... the rain stayed mostly offshore and east of the area today. That was lucky!! However, the risk for flooding continues tomorrow.
As such, the flood watch issued by the national weather service continues until 4pm tomorrow (Thursday 7/25/24). The risk along the coastal communities is even a bit higher than it was today...this is due to a developing broad low near Brownsville that is expected to move north overnight and tomorrow...that low will bring substantial moisture and instability. Training rainfall is likely and some areas could pick up some significant rainfall that is sure to cause flooding.
I know you all would love to know where the heaviest rain will fall... so would we! Mother nature will decide, but if you're in the red or yellow regions in the graphic below... you have elevated risks of flash flooding rainfall.
Stay weather alert and plan your morning communite/midday plans accordingly!! Have a way to receive warnings and stay safe!

Don't shoot the messenger.
Flood Watch tomorrow (Wednesday 7/24/24) 6am thru 9pm.
Saturated ground and high tide most of the day means if Galveston gets more than 3-4 inches of rain quickly, you can expect flooding in areas that have already seen flooding last weekend.
Be safe, y'all.

Storms nearly stationary over Galveston and I-45 South corridor have dumped 2-5" of rain with more falling. Flash Flooding is occuring. Additionally, the tide is rising in Galveston which will hamper draining of new rainfall. Flash Flood Warning in effect until 4:15am. www.saltwater-recon.com

07/17/2024

The tide in Galveston is still on the way out this evening with another foot or so to go. These extremely low tides make for great beach walking, shelling, and metal detecting. This week's lowest tide is expect on Sunday evening at 9:35pm.

Our sky cam survived the entirety of Beryl’s onslaught in Galveston. For many of you, including the entire SWR team and our families, that had to endure the roar of the winds for hours, this barely scratches the surface of the in-person experience. Nevertheless, it is a storm that we will study and learn from for years to come.

Beryl is leaving her mark on Texas tonight. I hope everyone is staying safe. Lots of areas without power. Lots of rainfall. Coastal Flooding still a problem through Monday. Tide & Surge are coming in simultaneously right now.
Stay safe and hunkered down.

75mph winds at Surfside, surge is coming in!

07/08/2024

Winds now gusting to 50mph in Galveston, TX. Heavy rainfall occurring with an incoming tide that could exceed 4.0 feet by 5am. Meanwhile, Beryl is avoiding landfall sitting just off the coast of Matagorda, TX, and continues to strengthen. We recently captured winds of 75 mph in Port O'Connor in the western eyewall of Beryl. We have a long night and morning ahead, folks! Be safe. Hunker down.

Beryl has been upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane based on reconaissance and radar data. Also a tornado watch has been issued for most of SE Texas. Now is the time to be hunkered down for the night, through the morning. Winds on the increase, power will struggle to remain on as winds increase, and water levels will be on the rise. Be smart, and stay safe!

8PM Update -- Beryl a 70mph TS -- 7.7.24
**Beryl is a strong Tropical Storm with 70 mph winds and an expanding wind field this evening.
**While she's struggling to overcome the dry air (that we are very thankful for), she's still slowly strengthening and could become a hurricane later tonight. The surge levels along the Texas coast have been increased again, and Beryl's track has wobbled east of north in the past hour. Assuming she does not wobble back west...the landfall could very well be between Freeport and Matagorda. This increases sustained winds and rainfall for Brazoria County and Galveston/Galveston County noticeably.
**Galveston Island can expect 50-70mph winds (with higher gusts) and surge close to 6 feet with the potential for 7-12 inches of rainfall on top of that. History tells us that those water levels and rainfall totals may flood some homes and businesses around town. We are hoping for the best and that this doesn't happen, but it isn't looking great for the home team. The above assumes Beryl does not strengthen before landfall beyond a low end category 1 hurricane.
**For Brazoria county, peak surge of 7 feet possible along with 7-12 inches of rainfall. Winds 60-80mph with higher gusts. We are not as familiar with Brazoria county flood history, but it would appear that those water levels combined with the forecast rainfall would be problematic.
**After landfall, Beryl moves towards west Houston with heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and many power outages.
She might seem like a big nothing, and we would welcome that. I think she's going to cause some real headaches.
**Be where you plan to be in order to be safe this evening. Hunker down, have access to weather alerts, and anticipate a long night and frustrating morning tomorrow.
We'll keep pushing out updates and showing live cams when we can.

Looking at live conditions in Surfside & Galveston, TX as Beryl moves towards the Texas coast. Landfall expected near Matagorda, TX early Monday morning.

07/07/2024

**Beryl is organizing, and strenghthening slowly. Sustained winds now 65 mph. Currently, the storm is still battling dry air, but if the center can completely close off (which we think will happen this evening) then strengthening will occur at a much faster pace. There is a risk of rapid intensification to a Cat 2 with 90+mph winds prior to landfall, but the forecast currently calls for a Cat 1 at landfall, with 85 mph winds.
**Landfall still expected very near Matagorda before sunrise tomorrow.
**Preparations for hurricane force winds, 74mph, should be brought to completion in Galveston within the next few hours. From San Luis Pass southwestward, preparations for winds to Cat 2 strength should be completed ASAP.
**Water levels are on the increase. Water level is 3 feet and rising at the North Jetty entrance in Galveston. At San Luis Pass the Water Level is approaching 3 feet.

TS Beryl Update: 11:30am on 7/7/24.

There is a risk of rapid intensification to a Cat 2 with 90+mph winds prior to landfall, but the forecast currently calls for a Cat 1 at landfall, with 85 mph winds.

**Water levels are on the increase. Water level is 3 feet and rising at the North Jetty entrance in Galveston. At San Luis Pass the Water Level is approaching 3 feet.
**A rainband is moving through SE Texas that has produced gusts to near 40mph in Galveston. Heavy rain is occuring with this band, but it is moving quickly. Future rainbands will bring stronger and stronger winds until the storm moves inland and weakens through the day on Monday.
**Biggest risks for coastal communities are the storm surge, 4-6 feet is possible from the landfall point to San Luis Pass. In the Galveston area, 5 feet seems likely, but we would recommend preparing for another foot if this storm gets it's act together quickly today, or if the track shifts a tad more east. Winds of 50-70 mph are likely in Galveston, further southwest along the coast winds of 60-80 mph are possible especially near the center of the storm. These wind speeds could increase if the storm gets sufficiently strong and the wind field expands. Power outages are likely.
**Coastal Rainfall -- rainfall amounts are forecast between 6-8" along and east of Beryl's path at the coast. On top of storm surge that will prevent runoff and drainage, this will quickly lead to additional flooding of streets, and possibly some homes or businesses that experience surge impacts combined with the heavy rainfall, or where rainfall exceeds 6-8" inches in a very short period of time.
**Biggest risk for inland communities is heavy rainfall and high winds. Winds inland could be 40-60mph west of I-45 and highest close to and immediately east of the storm's center which should track up through Matagorda, to Bay City, to Rosenberg and near Sealy, Tx and then NNE towards Huntsville. The wind field is large and these tropical storm force winds will impact all of Houston if not all of SE Texas. Widespread power outages will be likely with these winds. And localized flash flooding appears likely as well along and immediately east of the center -- see moderate risk graphic below.
**Everyone should have a method to receive weather warnings. Keep your devices charged, and keep your refrigerators and freezers closed as long as possible to retain cold if you lose power. The power could be out for multiple days for some areas.
**Tornadoes -- tropical storms and hurricanes are very capable of producing waterspouts and tornadoes as they approach and make landfall. The dirty side of the storm, or the side to the right of center when looking in the direction the storm is moving, is most prone to tornadic activity. We saw this with a couple of bands from Alberto. There's not much you can do to prepare for a tornado except know where you will seek shelter and have a way to receive the warnings should warnings be issued.
**Please continue to watch the progress of Beryl closely and monitor messaging from your city officials as well as the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service!

**11pm Update - Tropical Storm Beryl, less than 36 hours from landfall - 7/6/2024
**The National Hurricane Center made a very small adjustment to the east for the forecast track. This brings Beryl closer to a Port O'Connor landfall. The models have also come into better agreement on this. Several models do still bring Beryl in east of Port O'Connor, closer to Matagorda. For this reason, we are watching Beryl all the way in and being mindful of impacts should she come ashore closer to Houston/Galveston.
**The current forecast calls for a strong Cat 1 hurricane at landfall with peak winds near 85mph, but residents from Corpus Christi to Sargent, TX should prepare for a Cat 2 hurricane (96-110mph winds).
**Beryl remains a 60mph Tropical Storm this evening, and satellite presentation is unimpressive. However, we do expect strengthening will begin sometime tomorrow afternoon, and the NHC is hinting at the possibility of rapid intensification just prior to landfall on Monday morning.
**Landfall is expected to occur Monday morning between Corpus Christi and Matagorda.
**The storm is less than 33 hours away from the coast. Therefore, preparations should be completed no later than tomorrow (Sunday) morning.
**Tropical storm force winds could arrive at the coast by 2pm on Sunday, and tides will be on the increase.
**Rip current risk will be high from tomorrow through the end of next week.
**Wave heights could approach 6-7 feet in shore to the east of landfall, including Galveston. This will increase beach erosion and when combined with tidal surge, could cause travel problems on Highway 87 in Bolivar, 3005 in Galveston, and Blue Water highway in Surfside. Plan your travel accordingly – BUT preferably don't travel on Monday.
**There is a storm surge warning in effect...surge of 3-5 feet is possible in and around Galveston (similar to Alberto tides last month). From San Luis Pass southwestward, the surge levels could be 4-6 feet.
Hurricane warnings are in effect for coastal counties southwest of Brazoria, meaning hurricane conditions are less than 36 hours out. A hurricane watch is in effect for coastal Brazoria (in case the wind field expands, or the track shifts east). And a Tropical Storm warning is in effect pretty much everywhere else, up to Houston/Harris county. So if you're not in a hurricane warning area, you're likely in a tropical storm warning area unless you're far enough inland.
**Additional threats...
1) Heavy Rainfall -- heavy rain is expected along and east of Beryl's track. Several reliable models indicate rainbands on Monday could impact the same areas over and over (from the coast all the way to Houston, including Galveston, the 288 corridor, and I-45 corridor). This would lead to very high/localized rainfall totals (6-10") in a short period of time leading to flash flooding. It's impossible to pinpoint where this may occur until it's happening. If you're in a flood prone area, and/or if your property or street floods during high tides, then you will want to take into account the possibility of another half a foot or more of rainfall ontop of that water level. The rain will have no where to go...especially early Monday morning when the highest tides will be in place.
2) Tornadoes -- tropical storms and hurricanes are very capable of producing waterspouts and tornadoes as they approach and make landfall.
3) Power outages -- wind gusts of 50-60 mph at the coast for Brazoria and Galveston look very likely. Winds of 40-50 mph will be possible as far inland as Houston. Some higher gusts up to 70mph in squalls will be possible. These winds can down power lines and cause objects (like trees, tree branches, or debris) to blow into lines that can knock out power for days. If you see a power line down, do not approach it, and if a line falls on your vehicle, do not get out of the car. Call 911 and report the downed line.
4) If you choose to ride out Beryl and you're right along the coast in an area that is under a hurricane warning or a storm surge warning... please understand that emergency services may not be available for you from early Monday morning through early afternoon. They may not be able to get through high water, or conditions may be too bad, or they may be on other priority calls that delay them getting to you. For this reason, some voluntary evacuations have been issued for parts of coastal Brazoria and Galveston county including the west end of Galveston Island. If you're a medically sensitive individual, it may be best for you to ride inland and stay in a location that may be more reliable from a power and emergency services standpoint.
**Please continue to watch the progress of Beryl closely and monitor messaging from your city officials as well as the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service!
Stay safe! Look for another update in the morning with the latest!
