Finished the big projects that I previously discussed today and everything is put back together, looking and sounding fantastic! MAJOR shout out to Daniel Lane for all the help today. No way it gets done without him.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted to my page here after firing up my Instagram account, but a lot is going at Grey Cat. I made a pledge to bring my studio to the next level with a few capital investments and some environmental improvements. The Media 51 is functioning better than it ever has in the 2 1/2 years it’s been in service at Grey Cat thanks to Dave Rochester at Technical Audio Services. Have added a couple of decent pre-amps, but the big change is with the monitor system. Have added a pair of KRK’s for reference, and just today swapped the Event 20/20’s for a pair of bi-amped powered Yamaha HS8’s. The change is more dramatic than I anticipated! Keeping my 20 year old NS-10M’s to keep us honest. I added a pair of Tannoy’s to the vocal room for playback and spent a good bit of time reconfiguring the space to claw back some valuable landscape. Much less claustrophobic in there now. Added some acoustical gobo’s to the drum room and have some tiles on the way to me to complete the additional treatment in there.

Projects to come include re-routing the effect sends so that the more commonly used devices can be automated with my SuperTrue package. Got a little bit of tidying up to do with some cabling in the control room and plan on adding a large acoustical gobo over the console.

We’re half way through the mixing for the Famous Class Records release of the Upchuck LP due to be delivered for mastering by Heba Kadry in the next couple of weeks.

What I’m most looking forward to is getting back to tracking some new projects which are coming together as we speak. It’s been quite cathartic to have this busy work to do during the “Gloom Period” of winter. I am grateful to have this creative space to work in and talented folks who darken its doorstep.

If you’ve got a project you want to work on just shoot my an email/text and we’ll get you scheduled. I’ll also pledge to do a better job of updating this page in 2022.

Peace,

Pat

Vernon wants to wish all of you a Merry Christmas from all of us at Grey Cat Sound! Covid aside, it’s been a big year studio wise. We started the year with completing full retro fit with our fully automated Amek Media 51 in late March. Far more work than I ever expected it to be, but learned a lot and made a friend of David Rochester of Technical Audio Services who walked me through fixing my blown up power supply while on a cell phone at 10:00PM at night while driving through a North Carolina rain storm. By mid year he had us not only fully functional, but sounding amazing!

We finished four full length records this year including amazing projects from Patterns of Interaction, Upchuck and 5th Down. We also tracked an entire choir performance in studio, 151 vocal tracks in all!

There were many individual song projects we completed as well while we continued to learn and get familiar with all the options we now have at our figure tips. Each one was better than the next. Learning. That is what this year was all about and what we will continue do at Grey Cat.

I want to thank Daniel Lane for his unbridled enthusiasm and growing obsession with the recording arts. He has definitely kept me on my toes and challenged me to stay out of ruts. Andrew Henry and TJ Wyatt who brought the most bangin’ tune up to Grey Cat from FL one weekend a few months ago. I haven’t had so much fun in a very long time. To Michael and Christian Fleisch who brought that amazing and challenging choir project to Grey Cat that was not only an epic project to work on but also kept me busy and from dwelling on the worst parts of unemployment. It was great to have something to look forward to every week and the prospect of actually seeing real people during the week was a great comfort.

There is no question that had it not been for having Grey Cat Sound to rattle around in during these trying times I really don’t know if I’d had made it this far.

There is much planned for 2021 beyond the hope the vaccines will bring and I’m starting to actually feel hopeful myself. Peace everybody! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Stay safe! And Beat Navy!

Negating a large amount of page turning, coughing, etc... using SuperTrue automation on a large choir project that wrapped mixing tonight. 12 tunes recorded under strict COVID protocols. 151 individually recorded vocal tracks all in. VERY happy with the final outcome. To be broadcasted during the holiday season once the video editing is completed. Stay tuned...

Completed our first automated mix last night! Worked magnificently and was a lot of fun!

VERY happy to announce that Grey Cat’s Amek Media 51 recording console is now FULLY functional with SuperTrue Automation, Amek Virtual Dynamics, and Recall capabilities restored!

In addition to being able to automate all mixing functions with VCA automation control, we now have access to twelve Rupert Neve compressors, limiters and gates that can be assigned to any of its 60 input modules. All automation, Virtual Dynamics and channel control variables (fader, pan, EQ, Aux, etc...) can now be saved and recalled at a later time to pick up where we left off at any given time during a projects process. This is very exciting for all of us working at Grey Cat currently and for all future projects.

All of this has been made possible by Amek console guru David Rochester of Technical Audio Services. Can not thank you enough Dave and look forward to seeing you again soon.
