From the Georgetown County School District:
As previously announced, GCSD schools will be open today. We recognized that Georgetown County has received an unexpected amount of rainfall overnight which has resulted in flooding and a loss of power in some areas.
Buses will operate today but may be late arriving at some bus stops. Additionally, there are a few isolated areas that our buses may not be able to access.
GCSD does not want anyone to put themselves in danger in order to travel to school. Please do not travel unless it is safe for you to do so. Any weather related tardies or absences will be excused.
Georgetown County schools will return to normal operations on Friday.
The county has postponed a stormwater hearing on the Magic Oaks proposal which would put 27 lots on 8.3 acres off Highway 17 near the Hammock Shops.
From Georgetown County:
Some good news from our latest briefing with the US National Weather Service Wilmington NC. Predicted rainfall over the next couple of days is down to 4-6 inches. Storm surge projections have also decreased and we are now anticipating a surge of 1-3 feet. This doesn't mean you should let your guard down. We will still experience tropical storm force winds this afternoon through tomorrow, with sustained winds of 40-45 mph and stronger gusts. We're still waiting on river flood models and we also have to take into consideration rainfall in other areas of the state that will flow downriver to us. Expect downed trees and isolated power outages. There are currently no damage reports. We have resources on standby if needed, but we are cautiously optimistic.

If you missed this year's J.O.Y. School finale, here are some highlights along with the story behind this long-running summer program for children with special needs.
The Waccamaw Neck’s first sea turtle nest inventory took place at DeBordieu earlier this evening. 12 hatchlings were found and given a hand on their journey. If you live along the beach, or are staying along the beach while visiting, make sure to keep outside lights off between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. because sea turtles dig the dark.
On National Hammock Day (July 22), two Pawleys Island weavers will be honored at the Hammock Shops Village. Marvin Grant and Harry Woodbury share their stories in this video. There will be a ceremony at noon and a celebration from 2 to 8 p.m.
Happy 4th of July from Pawleys Island. Another awesome parade! Which float was your favorite?
Volunteers with S.C. United Turtle Enthusiasts inventoried three nests on Debordieu’s beach this morning. Three hatchlings got help getting to the Atlantic Ocean for the start of their journey.
