In his 29th season as East Islip boys basketball head coach, Rob Schwender is embracing the challenge of bringing an inexperienced group up to speed and make a playoff run in Suffolk League III. The Redmen didn’t return any starters from last season’s 14-win team, but jumped out of the gate in promising fashion with victories over two (Northport and West Babylon) rivals while falling to heavy league favorite, Smithtown West.

A group of bereaved Long Island parents placed over 100 purple rocks at the Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial Park in Islip, part of the Suffolk County Environmental Center. The rocks from The Purple Rock Project feature the names and faces of more than 100 people lost to opioid and fentanyl from over 30 states across the country, requested by people seeking to memorialize their loved ones.

A photography exhibition will open up the new year at the Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts (BAFFA) Gallery in Sayville.
The show, “Chasing the Light,” features the work of local photographers Robert Verbeck, Pat DeLuca and Carol Rosenthal, each depicting scenes from around the world at the BAFFA Gallery throughout January, with an opening reception scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10, from noon to 2 p.m.

Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed a bill in the state legislature that would have reinstated recognition of the Montaukett Indian Nation in New York State, over 100 years after the state controversially revoked the tribe’s recognition.

A street in Brentwood is to be renamed in honor of firefighter Chris J. Allen. Allen died on Jan. 16 of last year after a three-year-long battle with cancer.
He was a member of the Brentwood Fire Department for 44 years. At the Nov. 18 Town of Islip Board Meeting, on the agenda was the renaming of Newman Street and Peacock Place in Brentwood to Chief Chris J. Allen Way. Legis. Sam Gonzalez and other members of the Brentwood Fire Department spoke on behalf of Allen.
