Congratulations to Chris Sauve, Sandro Cleuzo, and James Baxter on winning “best Character Animation” at the Annie Awards!(Mary Poppins Returns)
Chris is a fellow left-handed Canuck who has been with the studio since the start(12 years). So great to see Chris get this recognition!
To reiterate, Chris was the “Animation Supervisor” at Duncan Studio for Poppins.
Congrats to the whole Duncan Studio team, and Jim Capobianco, for the “Best Animated Special Production” victory too!!

Iron Giant: New animation 2015
Iron Giant: New animation
A process video of the rough and final version of a shot. 2015
Duncan Studio were fortunate to animate 2 new sequences for Iron Giant (Blu-Ray to be released this year).
Director Brad Bird originally wanted the sequences added to the original film's release....and was able to finally add them to the film last year.
Animator: Chris Sauve. Chris was a Supervisor on the original film(1999) and was fortunately already working at the studio.

The Wild: Opening Sequence (tall tale)
Co-Directed by Mike Smith & Ken Duncan
(2006)
The opening sequence for "the Wild". The sequence is stylistically different than the film. The idea was to be "theatrical" as it is a father telling his son a tall tale.
Many CG "rules" were broken: no motion blur, scalable rigs for exaggerated poses, and "flat" environments that were designed for each shot.
We had a lot of fun with the animation crew on this short piece.
If you've got kids, grandkids, brothers, or sisters you may want to check out the Duncan Studio app, "My Beastly ABC's"!!
Below is a little video showing some of it's functionality. You can play each page(Letter) interactively or let it run like a short film (approx. 8 minutes), narrated by Jim Dale ("Harry Potter" audio books performer).
You can find it on iTunes by searching for: My Beastly ABCs

For the 2012 Olympics, our studio animated a few "bumpers"(segments before commercial).
Compositing:
We render the character as dozens of layers(hair, skin, etc.), and then adjust those layers(color, contrast, saturation, etc.) with the Compositing Dept.
Here is the raw Mental Ray Renders, and then the finished adjustment in Compsiting.
Duncan Studio recently animated for Universal Studio's "Minion Mayhem" ride (Florida and Los Angeles Theme Parks).
Here is an example of CG Animation process:
1- Very rough pose test(blocking). The animator roughs out broad ideas for the shot. No details are done, as they are not important at this stage.
2-After several iterations, the animator has a more complete approved Pose Test. The facial expressions are here, and it has been broken down with additional keys(breakdowns).
3- The Final version. The inbetween spacing of the Keys has been applied (interpolation, splining). The details are finessed.
If the shot does not work in the Pose test, it will not really work in the inbetweened version.

Electric City Shot Breakdown 02
Shot breakdown.
Our budget was limited, so we found clever ways of simplifying the animation on occasion. For instance, when the man flies in he is a "held" drawing that we move across the screen. Also the men who are zapped are also "held" and then some "puppet tool" techniques were applied during compositing.
