for the People of California: The first of its kind.

50 short films completed and archived on kcet.org are just the beginning. Already in the pipeline: Optimizing content for coastal apps, VR & AR, launching a television series for public television, and establishing a desperately needed virtual infrastructure media hub serving millions of annual visitors to the c

oast and more than 100 stakeholders in the field overseeing local jurisdiction of the trail. California Coastal Trail aspires to effectively promote California through the prism of the Coastal Trail to residents, tourists and businesses alike with inspirational storytelling and inventive use of technologies on behalf of the ultimate resource in our home state: The coastline itself. KCET, the nation’s largest independent public television station, has syndicated and archived three seasons of the digital series CALIFORNIA COASTAL TRAIL. The series is designed like a digital field guide and aims to raise awareness about the California Coastal Trail, its past, present and future through a series of historical narratives, camping and hiking guides, as well as articles about important cultural points of interest along the Trail. Celebrating 40 years of the 1200-mile border-to-border trail along the most beautiful and most visited coastline in the world. In 1972, Californians passed Proposition 20, recommending that “a hiking, bicycle, and equestrian trails system be established along or near the coast.”

In 1999, the Coastal Trail was designated at the federal level as a Millennium Legacy Trail to be within sight, sound and smell of the coast — effectively creating a 1200-mile Linear Park along the entire Californian coast. The California Coastal Trail is a once-in-a-century planning and construction effort equal in importance to the National Park System. One of the Golden State’s best kept secrets, the coastal trail’s statewide impact on tourism, local commerce and the California lifestyle is estimated to exceed more than several Billion Dollars annually.
