Bay County Emergency Management officials invite the public to participate in the first of several Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) basic training courses that will prepare citizen volunteers to aid first responders during emergency events.

Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of CERT members, first aid, basic search and rescue, disaster preparedness and CERT organization.
“This program trains volunteers to provide support that professional first responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks,” Bay County Emergency Management Planner Eric Kunzman said. “Hurricane Michael, the pandemic, and multiple flooding events have really highlighted the need for a robust CERT in Bay County.”

Members of the Bay County CERT program may be called up on during times of disaster to volunteer as Citizen Information Center call takers, help in the Emergency Operations Center, help with traffic control, light search and rescue, or manage volunteer or donation centers.

The first two-week training course will begin Nov. 30 and will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday nights with one Saturday morning commitment in the second week. The course is required for community members to become part of the Bay County CERT; however, members do not have to be a part of the team to attend the course.
Students will be required to attend all course days and pass a test at the end to complete the class and will be required to perform basic tasks and lift objects that weigh 20 pounds or less. The course is free of charge.

Update: The Florida Missing Child Alert issued for 6-year-old Enrique Cortez-Dubon has been canceled. It is with sadness that we report the child was found deceased this afternoon from a possible drowning. Our thoughts are with his family and the Panama City Beach community and first responders who helped search for him.

A Florida MISSING CHILD Alert has been issued for 6-year-old Enrique Cortez-Duban, last seen in Panama City Beach. Enrique has a large mole on his back. If you have any information about this child, please contact the Panama City Beach Police Department at 850-233-5000 or 911.
