Update 9:31pm 11/5/24

Bradway Fire: today crews from Monson, Westover Air Base and Department of Conservation and Recreation forest fire control returned to work a section of the perimeter that has been giving us a hard time. There is now a continuous 100’+ parameter around the entire fire but the fire is not declared out as there are still smoldering areas. Resident may still see and smell smoke for days. We will continue to check on it daily. If you see open flames anywhere in town call 911.

Brian Harris, Fire Chief

Update 3:45pm 11/4/24

We are getting ready to finish up for tonight. Tomorrow the roads will be open. While the parameter is looking good there are still many hot spots that will need to be monitored for days to come. Residents and people who use the recreational areas locally should be vigilant and if they see something that doesn't seem right call 911. We will continue to come up daily to monitor and if we see anything that concerns us will respond back to the area to address it. People in the area will still see and smell smoke for some time. If you see open flames that should be reported.

Brian Harris, Fire Chief

Update 8:41pm 11/3/24

We are done with operations for the night. We have one person in our Fire Department pickup patrolling the area to watch for flare ups. The crews were able to aggressively attack the fire using hose streams for the first time today using more than 30,000 gallons of water. In most areas the fire line was improved from 10 feet to 75 feet. We will have a similar sized crew on site tomorrow to continue making sure the parameter is secure. This fire will be difficulty to call 100% percent out as it is burning deep into the ground in areas. Our goal is to make sure none of those areas are close to places that catch fire and reignite. There will be a lingering smell of smoke in the area for a long time, cooler temps tonight are pushing the smoke into the valley of Bradway Road, we will continue to monitor conditions throughout the night.

Brian Harris, Fire Chief

Update 4:04pm 11/3/24

MEMA

A Local Coordinator continues on scene in Monson supporting the Incident Commander.

Bradway: Monson, MA. Started 10/31 in the evening. Crews made great progress in securing perimeter today with assistance of helicopter operations, forestry task forces and DCR Fire crews. Mapped at 44 acres, 90% Contained. Heightened dead tree snag issues throughout the burn area. State and local crews engaged.

Update 6:50pm 11/2/24

We will be back at the Bradway Fire tomorrow 11/3 at 08:00. Peaked Mountain and Lunden Pond will be closed again. Citizens should avoid the area and not drive around barricades. We would like to thank the citizens for the outpouring support they have been showing us. We also wouldn’t be able to do this without the many mutual aid assets that have responded to this event. As of right now the fire is 90% contained but will most likely still require several more days of working hot spots.

Brian Harris, Fire Chief

Original Post 11/1/24
