In loving memory of Norma Winkler, 4/3/1950 - 6/4/2024:
Norma was not your average mother; she was a loving soul with a unique personality. She had a knack for being a little odd at times, often speaking her mind without a filter. But that was part of what made her so special. We just didn’t know what she was gonna say.
One of the things that set Norma apart was her incredible compassion for others. She had a big heart and would go out of her way to help those in need. Whether it was taking in my friends who needed a place to stay, lending a helping hand to those trying to get back on their feet, or leaving food and necessities for the homeless guy hanging out at the gazebo on Granada and having conversations with him while I was surfing. She may not have known much about basketball, but that didn't stop her from coaching teams. She was always there, whether it was attending local music shows I’m sure we’re just horrible noise just to support my musical endeavors. And always being a comforting presence during difficult times. Norma stood by me through thick and thin. She never gave up, even when faced with the challenges of my addictions and bad life choices. Norma was a pillar of strength, always there to offer support, understanding, and love. She was the one who visited when there was no one else. She was there to hear my son’s last breath, as Jess and I were there for hers, each holding a hand.
Norma's love extended to her grandchildren as well. She was overjoyed to welcome A&B into the world, proudly sharing their birth pictures with anyone who would look walking around the hospital showing everyone the camera. Norma was a supporter of the arts, and she had a particular love for drawing portraits. She encouraged my creative endeavors and stood behind every idea I had.
Norma was not one to tolerate nonsense. She had a no-nonsense attitude and never hesitated to call someone out when needed. She may not have had many friends, but those she had cherished her deeply and stood by her till the end. I was a hell raiser of a kid and young adult, but mom did her absolute best as a mother for me and Michelle.
One thing that brought great joy to Moms life was her love for science fiction, particularly Star Wars. In fact, I’m named after George Lucas. I always keep a Star Wars reference in my life as a tribute to her in one way or another.
Mom, as we bid you farewell, I take comfort in knowing that you are reunited with Chase Rhythm, and we send you our love. May the Force be with you, always and forever.
