Memorial Day ! A day to reflect on the sacrifices of all the men and women who have served, died, or been injured in service to help keep our country free and safe. These photos are a tribute to our father Captain Archibald C. Doty, Jr. who served in the Army Air Force in World War 2. He was based in India and flew large cargo planes transporting supplies and sometimes soldiers over the Hump ( the Himalayan Mountains ) to China and Burma to keep China from being decimated by Japan. The flag photo is a flag my grandmother flew outside the front door of her house in Yonkers while my grandfather served in World War ! and also while my dad was serving in World War 2. The photo of medals are some of the ones he received during his service. The photo of Dad shows him taking a break from the action. Please note that almost 80 % of the pilots that flew the hump did not come home after the war. There were major problems including parts that were hard to get or not up to standards, many maintenance issues, the weather over the mountains, and the fact our pilots had no fighter escorts because back then our fighter planes could not get high enough to fly over the Himalayas. Oh yes - our cargo pilots were often attacked by Japanese fighter planes as they came down the the China side of the mountains. Dad passed 2/27/2021 - just shy of turning 101 years old. He was and always will be our hero !
With the greatest love from Dave, Cindy, Sue, Ann, and Carol
