This week, we are so excited to welcome back Ted Thomas to discuss his 2009 documentary “Walt and El Grupo”, an account of Walt Disney’s Goodwill Tour of South America. Ted tells us about his experience producing the film, and how it lead to so many new discoveries, he is now releasing a follow up book, “Walt and El Grupo in Latin America”, with co-authors Didier Ghez and JB Kaufman.

This 230-page hardcover monograph is published by the , who will have a booth set up for book signings at this year’s Expo on Saturday and Sunday.

Many classic Disney films begin with a title sequence that helps establish its premise. As Walt Disney once explained, “It has become a real challenge to devise a sequence that is fresh and interesting and entertaining. Also, according to theory, it should help to get the audience into the proper frame of mind.”

For “The Parent Trap,” released on this date in 1961 and starring Disney Legend Hayley Mills, an animated sequence was produced in stop-motion by studio artist T. Hee and Disney Legends X Atencio and Bill Justice. This “little melodrama in miniature,” as Walt described it, was set to the film’s title song written by Disney Legends Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman and performed by Disney Legend Annette Funicello and pop singer/actor Tommy Sands.

Starring in the sequence was this charming family of puppets that “can trace [its] ancestry back to such things as wooden spoons, pipe cleaners, and empty toothpaste tubes,” Walt revealed. Having these puppets in the Walt Disney Archives allows our staff to preserve them as historical objects, which includes conservation work that protects their condition so they may continue to be shared with fans for years to come.
