⚠️ Forest Service News Release
U.S. Forest Service Prescribed Burn Alert for the Talladega National Forest

(Talladega, AL) January 23, 2025---- USDA Forest Service federal fire management specialists are planning to conduct a prescribed burn (controlled burn) on approximately 400 acres today, 6 miles south of Oxford in the Kentuck ORV area located on the Talladega National Forest, Talladega Ranger District.

Prescribed burns are low-intensity, prescribed fires ignited by trained personnel to remove excess fuels, such as vegetation and dead wood, that would enable wildfires to burn hotter and longer.

During today’s prescribed burn, part of the burn boundary is FSR 643 and Kentuck Road. These roads should be traveled with caution. The public may notice Forest Service fire crews and equipment. Smoke may also be visible on FSRs 589 and 507 east of the burn area. The wind is expected to be out of the west and will carry the smoke to the east. As the temperatures cool later today, the smoke may begin to settle down the Wolfskull Creek drainage.

Some settling may also occur around the general area of the burn. If encountering smoke on roadways, please slow down, turn on your low-beam headlights and use caution when encountering prescribed burning operations and smoke.

Prescribed fire plays an important role in the health of forest ecosystems. Applying prescribed fire on the land at the right place, at the right time, under the right conditions benefits the land and the surrounding communities. Update as of 6:15 AM and Calhoun, Cleburne, Shelby, and Talladega counties are now under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 AM Wednesday January 22. Could see up to one quarter inch of snow and that could cause some travel issues so drive carefully today and tonight.

UPDATE: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR CALHOUN COUNTY.

Calhoun County has been placed under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 AM Wednesday, January 22nd. Snow accumulations up to one quarter of an inch is possible. While only minor snowfall amounts are anticipated, and accumulations could lead to travel impacts.
