101 The Fox
ONE OF THE FIRST CLASSIC ROCK FORMAT RADIO STATIONS Now that we live in a time where classic rock is omnipresent in radio, it’s hard to imagine how anyone could doubt the ability of 101 The Fox to be a success. But when the station began in 1985, it was literally the first of its kind. And we all know that naysayers almost always accompany innovation. One of those with serious doubts in the early days, ironically, was one of The Fox’s longest standing on-air employees, Steve Garrett. He tells us about a conversation he had with a sales rep before he joined the KCFX team. “I said, ‘Do you really think this classic rock format is going to last?’ And here I am, eating my words, but 25 years later, and we’re still going strong.” Going strong might be an understatement. Today, when many Kansas City residents look forward to spending their morning commute with Slacker, and their evening drive home with Skid Roadie, 101 The Fox is one of the top-rated stations in the city. So how has the station not only lasted, but stayed at the forefront of KC radio in the last three decades? Of course to understand the present, you have to look at the past. We take you back in time to see how it all began, and why the station is still a success today.
101 The FOX is Kansas City’s ONLY Classic Rock Station.
